Ok, I have changed the jets in the zrt and wanted to take it for a spin to see how it ran,,,,with the 410mains (factory was 440) (97 900 tcat motor), it seems to run right around 1000/1100/1000,,,,Now I did not get to do any wide open runs,,,,that was just playing around the house. I did not want to leave town because I think the smell that I was getting was the clutch,,,,not the carbs or oil.
It doesnt engage until about 4500 rpm, and it doenst hit hard, it acts like you need to kick it in the a** to get it moving, even at 4500rpm,,,,,then at about 20mph, it wants to tears your arms out of the socket,,,,,decides that it wants to run?!?!?!?!?

I have the cat 9 tower (new last year) with silver cat spring,,,not sure on the weights, but they are all factory for the 900,,,, the helix is a 57-50, but I am changing that to a 60-54??? ( I think),,,, the spring is yellow and in the 4th of 5 holes ( can only go 1 tighter),,,,,,

Any clues to what I could have done,,,, I think the smell I am getting is the belt slipping,,,,its almost new, but I dont wanna throw another new one on it if I have other problems. Maybe a bad driven spring??? I did tear the driven apart and there was 2 big and 2 small shims,,,,,the belt sat down inside the clutch,,,so I took, out 1 big and 1 small and the belt now sits about 1/16th of an inch above the clutch now,,,,,

If I remember right, the last ride of last year, I had problems with the belt slipping,,,, I have an alignment tool and the clutches seem to be aligned,,,,the belt deflection is also at a little over an inch,,,,,

any clues?!?!?!?!

we are going to try to run tommorrow morning before I go in to work,,,,, thanks much in advance,,,
Brian

Your clutching is off for sure. Sounds like stock weights and a fairly high primary spring. 4500 RPM engagement is way to high. Secondary spring sounds stock, but I have no idea whether it is back together properly.

You really need to start first by checking the measurements again. Make sure that deflection, center to center, and offset are right on. I would also put the secondary spacers back in and find out the real reason the belt rides low (worn buttons, etc).

I tend to agree, probably belt spinning.

Sounds like you don't have enough side pressure on the secondary. Try a 60/50 helix it will keep your Rpm's up on the top..

It works,,,,after 1/2 mile of low rpms,,,,then a couple of 1/2 mile 40mph runs,,,,then a 1/2 mile wot run,,,,it works,,,,,I did nothing to it, just took it out to see that the jets were ok and the clutch decided to work......I looked it over and there is nothing wrong with it at all,,,, I will probably pull it off the sled when I get a day off work just to double check it all, but for now it works,,,,,thanks much

Did you get a chance to see if those new jets helped the fuel mileage any puree? Good to hear that the ZRT is back and working good again.

I dont know for sure,,,,we ran it pretty hard, the tank was about 3/4 full when we started and right at 1/2 when we finished,,,,so trying to gauge it that way isnt the best, but that is 30 mile in 1/4 of a tank,,,,, and that was quite a few wot runs,,,,,he just thought it was kewl to pass me on the firecat,,,,,,next time it snows, I will fill the tank, then put on 50 mile then fill it up again,,,,let you know how it turns out. Keep in mind, around here, we could wait a month for that much snow,,,,
