I'm looking for a sled for all around riding but mostly in the mountains. I only have around 3500cnd to spend, and found one. It is a 1996 Polaris INDY XCR600. It only has about 1500 miles on it and only one owner. It has a mountain pkg. on it but I am wondering is this an alright sled for in the mountains? I believe back in the day when these were top of the line sleds they were used as drag and cross country sleds would this sled do ok in the mountains? Thanks Nick.

I have that exact sled with the same package?? Has a 133.5" x 1.5" track, mtn bar, hood screens, powder skis. Got it with 2800 miles, $1600 last summer. All of the mtn stuff was newly added, and was basically brand new. Does really good in the fluff. I didnt' get it out enough last year, but this year looks alot more promising. I ride anywhere from 5000-8000 feet in elevation, sometimes higher. No problems.

Snowdrift, that's a sweet sled. The only thing I'd suggest is putting on a white windshield. Looks much nicer IMO.

Well I bought the XCR. I took it for a ride it RIPS. I mean, it easily does 85mph. Awesome sled. I got it for $2100 canadian. Which is a pretty good deal I think. now I just have to wait till next weekend to take it up to the mountains. thanks for your guys input. I would have to agree very nice sled Snow-drift. But I to think it would look better with the white lower style windshield. Just take a look at my profile a look at my sled with the low style and see what you think. Thanks again for your input. The white windshield is ok, but I just don't care for it myself. Besides, this was already upgraded when I got it.

Sno-pro-guy, the best thing you can do for that machine now (if it's not already done) is get a set of plastic skis. I can't overstate what an improvement it will make.

I had a 96 XCR600 had a 136X1.75 on it SLP skis and Fox shocks with the long travel set up. The sled rocked I wish I hadn't sold it. The only thing was that if the carbs got at all out of adjustment it was a bear to start. Had to play with the throttle hold it about 1/4 open to get it to start. Sled was fun and fairly light great for boondocking on did pretty good in the powder. Be careful if you mod it and make sure the clutch is balanced. They can break cranks, mine was stock and never gave me any problem except the hard starting once the carbs were synced that problem went away. I would gladly buy my old one back for what I sold it for.
