I''ve got a new 800ho w/DPM and put about 245 miles on it during my first ride last week. So far I love the feel of the engine and clutching, but have a small hick-up right around the 5100-5400 rpm mark. It''s a bit hard to explain, but when the rpm''s hit anywhere in this range on the gauge the sled starts fluttering/stuttering (almost cutting out) and will not maintain a steady rpm or speed. I cannot hold the tach needle anywhere between 5100 and 5400. It either wants to surge ahead or settle down below 5000.
At first I thought it was clutching because that''s right about where it starts shifting out, but it''s the engine actually acting like someone''s hitting the kill switch very fast off and on. A better analogy may be that it acts/sounds like your engine does when the DESS plug is not on the right way and you try to take off.
Then I thought one of the plugs went bad while running oil in the first tanks of gas. Put two new plugs in and the same result.
Whats weird is that it only happens at this narrow rpm range. Everywhere else it''s bang on. If I hit the gas when its fluttering, there is absolutely no hesitation in recovery so I dont think its loading up. Could it be a lean spot? Could it be electrical?
A buddy of mine has the exact same sled and although you can sort of hear the similar fluttering/stuttering sound at these rpm''s, his engine still maintains a smooth rpm and speed.
The sled is still very rideable, but it''s very annoying that I cannot maintain a steady speed right around 20/25 miles per hour. It''s either on or off in that 5100-5400 rpm range. It definitely has an issue because my buddy noticed it right away when we switched sleds.
Anyone have any thoughts???
