Hi there, I got a 01 mxz 800 standard. Baught it used with 1k miles on it. Pilgram Motorsports confirmed that they did the piston recall last Feb.
From a stand-still, Punch the throttle it bogs down. When punching it from a slow roll it seem to do better, but still bogs a little. The midrange seems to pull really hard! and I am turning the correct top RPMs.
Personally, i think it's a carb. problem. I did not tear into the carbs yet. Don't even know if I will find stock jets inside! I plan on checking for stock jetting and getting the correct carb settings from the dealer. Other than that, does anyone know of other reasons why it would bog?
Also, i should mention, as far as i know, everything is stock except for an aftermarket silencer.
Thanks for your help.
Has any clutch work been done to it?? How do the plugs look?? Sounds more like it is in the clutching... What is the compression???
If you can give some more info it may be helpfull.
Also check those reed blocks for delaminating rubber!! I just put in a set of boyesen RAD valves with a new set of wisecos and my '01 absolutly rips...

Definitely check the reed cages for delamination.

thanks for the info. I will check the reeds. How many miles do they typicaly go before delamination occurs?
plugs look good. compression is equal on both cylinders, as for clutching, i added some weight to the pins and a slightly stiffer primary spring (160/230 purple/yellow).
thanks
Not sure on how many miles before they come apart but I'm willing to bet IF those are the stock cages that came on that sled.. They are junk... you need to remove the reeds to get a good look.
Also, check those mixture screws.

Your experiencing a lean bog. Air is lighter than fuel, therefore when you stab it the air gets there before the fuel. Turn your fuel screws out 1 turn and this will probably fix it. If it doesn't turn them out in half turn incruments till the bog goes away. My guess is it also idles high and you have to burp the throttle to get it to settle down also. :D

skidoomaster, just curious what you had to pay for it. I have an 01 MXZ 800 for sale. Check out the link below.

Thanks guys for the tips, I found the problem! Dirty Carbs.... Runs like a champ now!!!
Speed: I baught it in July, paid $3500 for it. Sold it to my neighbor for 4k. I told him if he had any problems with it i would help him fix it. I've been watching your comments on your listing. Very nice sled! If you want my Opinion? I think its very hard to sell a used 2001 for 5000+. Expecially when you can buy a used 03 rev for as low as 4800. I'm not saying you won't sell it, you just have to find that "must-have" buyer. Personaly, if it was my sled? I would put it back to stock, (as much as you can) try selling it for 4k, then sell all the performance/cosmetic stuff on ebay. Your probably end up with at least 5k out of everying.... Just My Opinion.
good luck, happy trails.
