Hey all I just bought a used mxzx 700. How much horsepower does this sled have? I have heard a few different numbers. And what are the easiest ways to get big gains if the hp is low for its class. My next question is my buddy has a 99 yamaha srx 700. I have heard a lot of people say that this sled has 135-140 hp. Will I be able to be him if my hp is lower????

When the 700 first came out I believe it was about 122-125 hp.I think you'll be hard pressed to beat the SRX on a lake run.Your not really in the same class running twin cylinder single pipe against triple/triple even though they're both 700s.I think in a short drag race you'll do ok against him.Clutching and traction will be the key.

I think that if the Yamaha is stock then it probably won't have as much power as you said. I've played around with a few yamaha's and, not to bash them or anything, there triples weren't very impressive. I honestly think you could take him or it would be a close race.

Not to bash you, but yer nuts w00t lol there is no way that mxzx is gonna come close to that SRX. Maybe you tinkered with its baby brother the SXR, SX or a VMAX or something, anything other than the SRX! This sled is far more than impressive it is amazing. Hands down its the fastest 700 ever made, including the F7.

What do you mean the 700's had 125 when they first came out. What do they haev now? I called a dealer and he said it was closer to 135 or so..... Second question why did skidoo go from a twin with twin pipes to a twin with single pipe. The older 95-96 mach1 670's had twin pipes. There losing power that way. Just like the yamaha viper tripple to single pipe. Not to bash anyone but that weas a stupid idea. I dont ever lake race, i do 90 percent of trail riding, so would i be even close on the trails????? What can be done to achieve more hp?? Do they make a set of oem pipes for a twin that can go on this machine? What else can be done? Thanks.

That MXZX should make pretty quick work of the SRX on the trail as the Yammi only has like 8 inches of travel, not that great of a trail sled, but find a long straight away and you might as well take a picture cuase thats all you'll see of that monster. As for switching from twin/tripple to single pipes I assume it saved the companies a pocket of change one way or another. If you go to PSI or SLP's website you can look to see what they make for yer sled.

A single pipe is certainly less expensive than multiple pipes, but it's more than that. For trail use, a single pipe makes better bottom and midrange power than multiple pipes. It is also lighter. You're comparing apples to oranges here. On the trail, it's really not about peak horsepower, it's about a wide powerband, instantaneous acceleration and throttleability. Multiple pipes have a much narrower powerband. They can help your engine make more power because they are tuned for a certain narrow RPM range. Multiple pipes are much better suited to long straightaways and lake racing where you hold the thing pinned for much longer periods of time.

A guy I ride with had an '02 MXZ700. That machine was unusually strong, I believe that all of the '02's were. I wouldn't worry about any other 700 twins, except for maybe the F7. Nobody can touch the F7... yet.

Another guy I know had an '01 MXZ700, he couldn't touch the '02 no matter what he did. I saw that '02 beat an XC800, ZR800 and another MXZ800. Now, these might have been flukes - but the fact that it was running with 800's makes it a strong machine.

About taking your buddy's SRX.... that might be another story..

(and I'm not just saying that because I own one)

It may be close, but the SRX will beat your MXZx. The SRX is the fastest stock 700 out there barnone. At Houghton Lakes Tip-Up-Town every year I see SRX's eat up all competition, I don't know why Yamaha discontinued this bad-### sled.

The 02 MXZ 700 is rated a 122hp. This sled is an excellent choice for you if trail riding is your thing. I trail rode my 02 MXZ 700 sport with everything from XC 700'S to Firecats and it is sooo close to an 02 MXZ 800 on the lake you will have a perma grin. I could destroy an SRX in the trail. Gas and oil consumption are much better ( about 20 percent ) than a MXZ 800 and I got 3500 miles out of a factory doo belt!!! - way better than the 800 MXZ's I rode with ( only 1200 miles to a belt for them!! ).
That sled was without question the best sled I have ever owned ( I have owned 8 new sleds in 13 years ) and I never had to lay a wrench on it for anything other than maintenance.
I only had trouble keeping up to REV's in rough trails so now thats what I ride.

I miss my 700 - it was incredibly reliable with 6000 miles when I sold her. I should of kept it and got it bronzed :D

Don't know what dealer your talking to. Ski-doo doesn't even make a 700 anymore I've seen dyno sheets from when the MXZ 700 first came out and they were in the 120-125 range.As for the older 95-96 670 Mach 1 it made 122 hp with twin pipes.The stock 97 MXZ670 made 117-119 with the single side dump pipe.Do you really want to fuss with twin pipes for the sake of 2 or 3 hp?Then Ski-Doo made the 670 HO at about 129 hp so they are hardly going backwards with the single pipes.The twin pipes aren't the answer for trail friendly torque and low maintenance.If you don't ever lake race you don't want them.

LOL...I donno what that dealer was smokin...the rotax 800 is hard pressed to pull 135hp...the 700 is 127hp on the best of days man...and even that is pushing it...I would go with 125 as a good number

OOPs didn't realize they were still selling the 700.Anyways I still don't think there making 135hp! :)
