: Fuel Problems On My Tilly Carb

On my 75 Oly, I have a tilly carb. The fuel is getting all the way to the carb when you pull the rewind, but won't go any farther. I am pretty sure it must be the fuel pump on the bottom of the carb. Is there a way to mount a universal fuel pump on the sled and by pass the tilly pump? Or does anyone know if it's possible to repair a fuel pump on this carb? Or does anyone have any other suggestions as to what it might be?
I had damn near the entire carb apart and cleaned everything before trying to start this pig

You can buy a rebuild kit for those carbs that comes with new diaphrams.

Well i just installed the carb kit and still no go. The fuel is coming into the carb great and some is exiting through the return, but there is also gas coming out through the butterfly choke valve. I made sure to take that cross piece out and clean it as well as the needle but this thing is now spitting gas out the carb . Any ideas?

I know on my Til carb when i had problems starting my sled I would take the carb apart and find the needle was stuck, EVERYTIME. Man that carb pissed me off. I junked it and converted to a mikuni slide carb.

The problem of the needle sticking must be fairly common. It happened all the time on my 69 Oly. I was told that varnish builds up and the needle sticks.

You could try soaking the needle and seat in carb cleaner. That seemed to help on mine.

well i got her going guys. Turns out there was a ground wire that snapped and wasn't opening the ignition switch. And the damn needle was stuck. I WD 40'd it while it was out and it moves nice now

I worked on a 70's 300 olympic , and it had a tilly carb , it never did start or run very well , it always used a squirt jug and gave it a little shot to get her started , once it was running it would never run right , if you set the jetting correctly it would vibrate enought to change the setting , so it never ran good , a 250 elan would blow past it.

Tillys are the devil. We have to ussualy spray gas in the carb to get the old olympqie (my friends) going.

I've got several old sleds with the Tillotson carbs. I've installed primer kits on some of them, (those that I'm not concerned about keeping 'original'), and they help tremendously. A couple of shots with the primer and they usually come to life pretty easily. If the needles is stuck, I can usually keep the sled running with the primer long enough for the vibration to free the needle. Sure has saved me alot of cranking and probably more than a few carb disassemblies to free up the needle.

Ya know,,,
I have actually had very good luck with Tilly carbs. I have 4 Oly's and a TNT Silver bullet. They run pretty good. I don't have too many problems starting them(as long as the jets are dialed in).

What I have had trouble with is my Scorpion Lil Whip. This sled is awesome! Great shape! Picks the skis up and pulls hard!

My problem is the Walbro carb it had. It is a funky looking carb. It has a diaphram on top for pumping gas, but then at the bottom it has floats.

To make a long story short, I have had nothing but problems with this thing.

How would I go about switching to a mikuni? Do I have to get a fuel pump for it? What size mikuni? (32mm?) ZI have 2 hoses coming out of my gas tank, after getting the fuel pump, do I close one of the holes up?

I don't know why I'm asking, I'll never get to it this year anyway!

I had a Walbro on my '72 440 Panther, never could get it to run right. Did what Brother D is contemplating, put a Mikuni fuel pump on it and a 32mm Mikuni carb. Just blocked off the return line to the tank and changed the choke lever. Runs like a champ now. Go for it, Dave!

I think I will. Doesn't sound like too big a pain in the A$$. I love that sled, it's a blast to ride. Sometimes funner than the 800.
