: Spark Problem

I rode all day today, ran great. Strong everywhere didn't miss a beat. Then we stop for a second and it stumbles and died. It wouldn't restart. Plugs looked good, check for spark and two had spark and one didn't. I ended up having to get towed by two cats :cussing: I did a search on this and found that some 98 had a problem with a short under the motor, was this resolved for 99's? Right now i'm thinking coil or plug wire. Can a tripple still run if 1 cylinder isn't firing? Sorry if these are dumb questions but I'm new to snowmobiles. So any help would be appreciated. Thanks

yup a triple will run on two and yes they had a shorting out problem under the motor. what did it do when you shut it off ( back fire?) or just stop? do you have any fire? loose dess plug lot's of thing could hapen on a mach.

It just died without warning. I tried working the kill swith, dess, and the ignition, put new plugs in. Nothing seemed to work. I also noticed the speedometer didn't work right it only showed half the speed we were actually going (at 45mph mine would show like 20). Probably has nothing to do with my other problem but I thought I'd mention it.

Doodude : i have a 2000 Mach that did the same thing. rode strong all day, hit the kill switch when my buddy stopped for a smoke and then nothing.
The 98 did have a shorting issue and it usually took everything down not just one cylinder. and a triple can run on 2 cylinder, u will notice a differnt sound and power loss especially at top end.
With mine it was the stator.
i had basically no spark on them, just a small yellow spark every once in a while.

idoo800x, thanks I hate to go buying parts on a hunch. I'm thinking its the stator after checking everything over. I also remember that it would drop rpm's some when I would switch from low to high beam, is that normal? Does anyone know if the 99's had the same problem with the wiring short under the motor like the 98's did.

If it lost spark to only one cylinder, most likely it's a coil. The stator feeds all three coils at once, so, if you're getting spark to any plug it's not the stator. It also could be the ignition module. I just replaced my module because it would have spark and then it wouldn't for no reason. Mine lost spark to all cylinders, though. That's why I think it's a bad coil....

!!!UPDATE!!!

Finally fixed the sled w00t . Turns out it was the ignition module. Now I just have to go get it programed to recognize my tether. It only revs up to 3,000rpm's.
