: Need Premium Gasoline?

Asking this question for one of the skidoo racers that helped me out with my F3 problems. They know a lot about machines but not about the internet.

Question is, although premium gas is recommended for the 800 HO, has anybody successfully run one on regular unleaded. The price differential is substantial in our area.

The machine is brand new with about 700 km on it already and has only used premium to date.

thanks

They might be able to use 87 octane if they are in a pinch & can refrain from holding the throttle to the bar for long stretches & in cold temps. But I would think that to ensure the motor lives that 91 be the usual fuel.

Maybe someone can say whether a thicker base gasket is available. Making this change would lower the compression ratio & negate the need for premium gas.

What is price difference in your area, from reg to premium?. Here in the Interior of B.C reg is 75cents a litre, and premo is 85cents.

If you're using regular to save $$$$, don't do it.
If you're in a pinch and can't get premium, add enough regular to get you home and no more (and add the regular before you run out of premium so you get at least a little 'blend').

Revend's right, if you can lower the compression, you could run regular octane, but IMO, don't. The manufacturer's don't specify premium for nothing - if you run regular 87 through it, you run the risk of pre-detonation and serious engine damage.

From my experience in the past NW Ontario has the highest gas prices in Ontario. Driving east on the Trans Canada in '95 it was 49.9/L in Calgary for 87. Mid 50s in Winnipeg. Up to 64/L in Kenora :cussing: . I think it was back in the high 50s in Thunder Bay. Then gradually went down as I approached the Soo/Sudbury.

I think 'doo or any of the OEMs should take the price/availability of 91 into account when they tune their motors. There for a few years they had gotten away from the need to run premium, now they seem to be going back to it.

How many people in places like Dryden or Ignace put 91 in their cars or trucks? Probably not a lot. I wonder how long the gas sits in those tanks?

As an aside, I'm really looking forward to see what 91 will be going for when we're up in Kap & Cochrane this winter :whatever:

It would be nice if you could run the lower grade gasolines for the sake of saving a few bucks, but what worse is when your (x) amount of miles from the trailer and all the station had available is the lower grade gas, then your screwed.

This has happened to me a handful of times but it never has been an issue with my older machines, now i have an "04" 800 h.o. Gade and im trying to remember which city i was in when it happened so i can plan my Ontario trips this year.

Get a bottle of C-5 octane boost from VP Fuels and if you have to put in regular just add a cap full or two. C-5 may not be that easy to get cuase it's a leaded additive but it's the most recommended.

Thats a preety cool idea, might as well keep one on your machine at all times.

Are you sure its safe to use?
