: Riding In The Black Hills Sd, Area Info Wanted
NDMtnSledder 12-29-2003, 03:10 PM Were headed to the Black Hills in SD on the 1st. We have a few questions I was hoping someone could answer or knows were I can find this kinda stuff out. First off were all licensed in ND do we need a permit or anything to ride in SD. Next we will be taking my new 4place trailer that I built this summer. From what i've gathered in ND it doesn't need to be licensed but if I go into SD am I going to have to have it licensed and what steps does a person go through to have that done. Has anyone been riding in the Black Hills in the past any info on trails, places to eat, or were to stay would be great. Thanks for all the help in advance.
TommyBoy68 12-29-2003, 05:39 PM Sorry I can't really answer any of your questions, but I am jealous of the trip you have planned. I was there this summer for the first time in MANY years, and thought it would be interesting in the winter. The scenery was amazing. I hope you have a great trip when you go!!
Guessing that trailer licensing would not be required since you are not a resident of S.D. Wouldn't be surprised if there is a local trail permit required or something, that is fairly common in many other places.
trailertrash 12-29-2003, 07:11 PM To my knowledge you don't need a permit if your from out of state. I would think its the same for your trailer. I just got back from the Black Hills last weekend and the trails were great, they just got a bunch of snow last weekend. Anywhere in Deadwood is good to stay, just depends on what you want to do. We always leave from Rec springs just out of Lead. Trails Head, Mountain meadow resort, Buckhorn are all great stops on the trail. Good luck!

Head for the "Hills"...
Black Hills Trail Report & Maps (http://www.state.sd.us/gfp/sdparks/winter/trailcon.asp)
NDMtnSledder 12-30-2003, 03:47 PM WoddyCam we will in the North Eastern Part of South Dakota pretty much. We will be staying in Deadwood, SD which is pretty much right in the middle of the Black Hills Trail system. I called a few different places and the snow report was a base that had started to get wore down pretty good with 24inches of fresh snow last weekend and forcast for more towards the end of this week. I can't remeber the number now but if you do a search on the internet for Black Hills SD Trail Reports or Trails Head you can find more exact reports and trail maps ect.
Maybe we will see you there lilarrow. Were staying at the Super 8 in deadwood. I'll be riding a 03 red F7 snopro, with red handgaurds and I'll have my snowmobileworld stickers on by then.
lilarrow 12-30-2003, 05:29 PM Yea were staying at trailshead lodge and I'll be riding a blue and yellow edge x 600 with yellow handguards
trailertrash 12-30-2003, 07:00 PM You guys are making me want to go back out there again, Hmmm.... maybe i will. Trails were awesome with all the new snow. If you see a blue RX-1 or a 02' sno pro, I made it back out. Probably stay at the Holiday Inn express again. Its' right next the the #10 saloon, how convienent!
lilarrow 12-30-2003, 09:55 PM Do you have any pics or anything or have you done any off trail riding at all
NDMtnSledder 12-30-2003, 11:02 PM I will keep an eye out. Same thing here to I would like to know how the off trail riding is. Is it an area were you have to be really carefull if you get off the trail or not and is it legal or just in some places. Have fun and be carefull lilarrow and hopefully see you.
trailertrash 12-31-2003, 09:43 AM No, I didn't take any pics yet this year, next time I will. As far as riding off trail, be careful, the base is not very good, alot of rocks and stumps. I not sure what the "laws" are as far as riding off trail out there. Usually when we do alot of that we're with somebody thats knows the area alot better than us. Alot of the trails in the Hills cross private ground and going off trail in those areas is a big no-no, but the're usually marked. If I don't run in to you guys, have fun!
lilarrow 12-31-2003, 11:23 AM Yea me and my dad are riding with his friend who has been out there 30 plus times and knows the area well but this weekend the rails are gonna be very very packed lots of sledders are going at least 30 people from my town are going and there are tons from others just around southwest minnesota going
NDMtnSledder 01-07-2004, 12:52 AM Hey lilarrow so did you have a good time out there. I think I saw you bought if it was you, you were on your way out of trailshead at the time. Do you wear a back pack and blue and yellow coat and pants to match your sled. If so sweet looking sled. We had a good time once we got through our mechanical difficulties on friday and saturday. We were able to get about 4-5 hrs of riding each of thoose day but sunday we had a blast and managed to ride from 10-7 loaded up and headed home we made it home by 4am. Talk about a long day. We did learn one major thing about riding in the black hills never take off from deadwood that was horrible the first day. I'll have to post some pictures in a few days when I get them back.
