I have been told by a couple of people that having mechanical reverse in my 2001 MXZ 700 that my topp speed will not be as good as no reverse models. That seems foolish to me as when it is in forward it should be the same gearing with nothing else besides the 25/43 gearing in the chaincase. I don't know what it looks like or if there any intermediate gears in the chaincase of a reverse model but it seems that I should still be able to do 105 - 110 mph

other than the little bit of extra weight, I don't believe it will make any difference.

technically, weight will slow you down, but it should be minimal.

The one major downside to mechanical reverse is the lower gear size is fixed (one size fits all) so you need to vary gear ratios using different sized upper sprockets or you will have limited ratio multiplication on the pulleys (not shifting out fully due to tall gearing) generating unwanted heat. Still easier on the back though.

It does have about 5-6 pounds of weight which does add up to about 35#'s of rotational weight but the +'s out weigh the -'s big time. You will loose 2-3 mph on top, so what!
The bottom gear cannot be changed but who ever changes it anyway? Top gears can be changed to whatever you want.....

Thanks for the responses, what is the stock top speed of this sled and is a 25 or 24 top gear better for all around trail performance?
