Greetings all.

I am thinkin of doing a trip to the western end of the UP, making Mass City my base point.

Can anyone tell me the distance from Mass City to Copper Harbor? Also, Mass City to Lake Of The Clouds?

I am thinking I would like to ride Mass to Copper Harbor in one day, spend the night, then ride back to Mass the 2nd day. I am thinking this would be a pretty easy run. Am I wrong?

On the third day I was thinking of riding from Mass to Lake Of The Clouds and back. I have never been to lake of the clouds, so I am not sure if this is reasonable for a single day. I will have a buddy with me that is not experienced and I don't want to kill him with too many miles. (I want to make this a mid-week trip in hopes of less traffic and smoother trails)

Can anyone chime in with distances?

Of course, this is presuming the snow comes back.

Ken.

Ken,

I was up in the Western Up around the middle of Dec. We stayed in Ontonagon (10 west of Mass City) and road every direction from there. This is what I remember the miles to be estimated at:

Ont to Copper Harbor is about 120 miles one way. We made it up there and back in one day, but it was a long day of riding.

Ont to Lake of the Clouds is about 35-40 miles. You can easily get there and back in a couple of hours. Thats an awsome place...

Ont to Lake Gogebic is about the same 35-45 miles. Thats another easy half day trip.

The trip to Copper Harbor was pretty nice, specially north of Houghton. Its alittle long for a round trip, but one-way wouldn't be an issue for anyone, beginner or experienced. I believe there is only 3 places to stay in Copper, so you might want to call ahead and book something if you go that route.

I just did the Hancock to Copper Harbor ride 2 weekends in a row. I'd suggest you take #17 out of Hancock through Calumet and get on #3 to Copper Harbor. Better snow on those trails. Avoid Gay as I heard the trails were real bad. The trip from Hancock to the Harbor is just under 3 hours with moderate stops.
