I had my first day of riding yesterday on my 2000 Grand Touring 600. After putting about 15 miles on, the sprocket rips through the side of the chaincase. Does anyone know why this would happen? I recently had the sled serviced for the season, including the chaincase. If the mechanic forgot to put the chaincase oil back in, would it have caused this?

Did they removet the sprocket for any reason? If so they may have forgot to put the cotter pin back in and the nut spun off. I dont think that a lack of oil would cause that to happen, but I could be wrong.

look through your belly pan for the parts and see if the cotter pin is there.Does the 2ooo have mechanical reverse,if so was it used on that day

I'm not sure if they removed the sprocket. I only asked them to check the chain tension, and replace the chaincase oil. I will check for the cotter pin in the belly pan. Yes, the sled has mechanical reverse, and it was used that day. Actually, that is when it happend, right after I put the sled in reverse.

Sounds like they put the reverse fork in improperly when they put the chaincase cover back on, oops, I don't know how they did that you would have to force it.

We had to go recover a 2000 touring 600 with mechanical reverse, it also had the chaincase explosion problem. Not sure if it is a problem associated with that year or user abuse,(not done by you but others).

The bottom line is make them fix it for free...

hexamet: What sprocket ripped the case? Can you post a picture? Its hard to trouble shoot with out seeing what the damage looks like. Dino

It was the top sprocket.

OUCH!
It would be hard to reinstall the cover if the fork was not in place.

HEY GUY as a ski-doo tech. i'd say take it back to the dealer and get a freebee. if the did the pre-season they did it wrong or did extra and forgot to finish the job wright! either way you should get it done for nothing.
