It likes its gas and oil :) Other then that theres no problems I'm aware of. The 500 engine is awsome and will keep up with some 600's out there  Good handling and riding chasis. That sled has low miles too.

It would be a good sled but the better zr500 started in 2001. The 2001's came with the apv's. SWRules

They are awesome sleds, and are light and fast. Never heard of any major problems, sometimes the bearing on the driveshaft goes around 3000miles like some people have said on here and I've heard that if you put an NTN bearing in it than your set,so you might want to check that out when you get it and make sure that its ok other than that HAVE FUN! :)

I have owned that sled. Also have a 98 zl500 in my fleet and while it is technically my wifes sled, I do enjoy riding it from time to time.
I usually liken the zr500 to that of a light switch flick the throttle, off to 8,700 rpm, and its gone.
Not quite as fast as my 600, but was the fastest production 500 of its year.
phat_cat800 is right, it is an oil and fuel pig (9-11 m.p.g.) but a great handling fast little sled.
I've had zr580's and a few zr700's and this thing is as fast if not faster than both (the 700 would finally catch up about 90 m.p.h. and slowly walk alittle)
I never had the 580 beat it (but it was close behind)
A buddy had a zl550 and it was no match whatsoever.
Just my experience.
