: Intro And Newbie Who Needs Help...
indyandre 01-22-2004, 10:23 PM Hello, I am the most new of new to having a snowmobile. I just moved from sunny Arizona to Oregon. My first purchase when I got here was a 1995 Indy XLT SKS . I know it's old, but it looks brand new. I got a deal I couldn't pass up. My question is related to maintenance. As far as I can tell, the bike has been in storage for several years and up to this point I am afraid to fire it up without knowing much about these machines. I know atv engines inside and out and look forward to getting to know snowmobiles. Where can I go for maintenance info, as far as fluids and so on that should be replaced and any other things someone should do for a machine that has been sitting for several years. I ordered a clymer manual but I want to get to work on it immediatly. Any help is much appreciated and I am sorry for being so wordy on my first post. I look forward to getting to know the regulars on this forum. :celebrating:

Boondock 01-23-2004, 01:33 AM Drain all the gass out of the tank and flush it with new gass. Would not hurt to install all new gass lines and filter and change plugs. Pull and clean the carbs real good. By the way welcome to the sport of snowmobiling and to the web site. Never never go riding alone...take another snowmobiler with you. Wait for the manuel and lube everything and check it over real good...good luck and have fun...
polarisxc600 01-23-2004, 02:19 AM Welcome to the sport, i agree wait for the manual it has everything you need to know. Have fun and be safe
SEXltsp 01-23-2004, 09:57 AM Check the chain case oil as well.
On the right side of the engine compartment by the exhaust you should see a yellow dipstick.
Otherwise just do alot of reading and research.
You say you know atv engines. Not sure what kind but your XLT is a 2-stroke engine.
Enjoy the sport.
How many miles on that machine?
jtkennedy9 01-23-2004, 10:47 AM Welcome to the sport! You may want to consider taking it to a good local dealer and having them bring it back up to par. Some dealers will even help give you an education on your sled so you can take care of basic maintenance yourself.
indyandre 01-23-2004, 09:40 PM SEXltsp- It has 2200 miles on it. Sorry, May be a dumb question, but do you mix oil and gas, as is done with a 2-stroke atv engine? Also, where do you drain the chaincase oil. I have the sled torn apart for cleaning so now would be a good time to change the fluids.
Thanks so much for the info!
As for riding alone, I would never think of it, but thanks for the caution, I can imagine it could get pretty scary around dark with a broken sled. If anyone knows a good online source for parts and accessories I would really appreciate it, the best one I've found so far is "Dennis Kirk".
Thanks again, and I look forward to getting into this sport.
markcp 01-24-2004, 12:33 PM Dennis Kirk is a great place to start. Shade Tree is another. For personal gear and snowmobile extras Ebay is a sweet place to go. I have found several cheap prices on helmets, suits and parts for every brand. Alot of sport shops are trying to reduce inventory this time of year, and with very poor snow conditions in states like Minnesota, people want to get rid of many items CHEAP. With this advice, please don't bid against me...... Welcome to the sport of cold jet skis...... Mark
BCDan 01-29-2004, 01:55 AM Oregon has a book that is oriented to kids and snowmobiles, but the information it has in it is worth reading. It's called "Snowmobile Safety and You" and is published by Outdoor Empire PUblishing Inc. My kids had to take the permit class, and I read the book so they would not be smarter than me, and I even learned some stuff. OSSA (Oregon State Snowmobile Association) http://www.oregonsnow.org has local chapters all over the state; you may want to hook up with some of the folks in your local area. Snowmobilers are pretty awesome at helping others, whether its breakdowns or advice.
Oregon DMV may have a copy of the book, if they don't, contact the OSSA.
Good luck, welcome to Oregon
LET 'er SNOW!

You machine is oil injected. No need to mix gas. You have an oil resivour under the hood near the handle bars. Keep it full.
To drain the chain case oil their MIGHT be a drain plug but I don't think so. Otherwise you have to remove the four bolts holding the chain case cover on. This is also a good time to inspect the drive chain and gears. However a machine with 2200 miles is nothing.
