: Family Sledding
sledder mom 01-23-2004, 10:24 PM Hi there everyone! Anyone do any sledding as a family? My hubby got me a sled this winter and we've managed to hit the trails a few times - even with the crappy snow. We've had to travel a couple hours south to find any of the white stuff.... But hey - we got some fresh snow yesterday so we're good to go again. We sled with our two daughters - 7 and 9 years old. They love it! So far we've hit some trails near Alder Flats, Alberta, and we've also tried out Valemont, although the trails weren't groomed so it was miles of washboard. We might head out to Alberta Beach this weekend. We're also interested in trying out Nakusp BC during spring break - anyone tried that area out? I guess they have some cabins you can rent up there for a pretty decent rate. Let me know if you know of any good trails we could try out as a family.
XCR440SP 01-23-2004, 10:27 PM pffff, my fam sled?? he he they all think i am stupid :( I know how my fam would turn out, im 16 and older sis and bro it would be a family fight, we would be throwing snowballs at eachother and playing chicken and then ill get ran over w00t
sledder mom 01-23-2004, 10:35 PM hey, it's all fun and games til someone loses an eye!!!
Do the Doo 01-23-2004, 11:07 PM Just got back from Rangeley Maine with my wife, 3 year old and 8 month old. Justin, my 3 year old, took his first "True ride" around the lake three of the six days of riding. Two other couples joined us for the week long stay. I am promoting it to my kids and wife as a family sport since 5 knee surgeries has moved me off the ski slopes.
oldyeller 01-23-2004, 11:15 PM With me its always been a family sport. My dad and stepmother and my brother and his wife, various cousins and relatives and myself and my wife. Here's some pics from the late 60s.I'm the little guy in the blue skidoo suit on the old snocruiser with my dad(I'm about 4 years old). The tiny red machine is a Sno Pony that my dad and my uncle had a dealership for a while. The grey machine is a Ski-Daddler that they also sold for a while. Most of my family and relatives that snowmobiled with us have passed away now but my brother and his family and me and mine still get out most weekends.
Boondock 01-24-2004, 12:07 AM It has always been a Family thing with the wife and I. I am working on a family trip right now,,,, my wife wont ride, but my kids will and my nephew may go with us,,,,,,
and you dont know how true it is,,,,,it is all fun and games,,,,till you loose an eye
Ski-dude 01-24-2004, 12:49 PM I'm taking my wife on her first true snowmobiling trip. Other than riding in the fields behind the house she hasn't ever ridden before. Were going up to Paradise, Mi. the weekend of Feb. 6,7&8. I'm nervous about the trip. I hope every thing goes well and she has a good time, I'm already thinking about when we will be able to take our daughter along. She's only 20 months old so it'll be a few years, but I'm still looking forward to it. Gee, if my wife like this, maybe I'll have to buy a new sled and give her the one I have now. :p I hope this works out. :p
snowmutt 01-24-2004, 01:55 PM well..... if you think snow in july the family better be into it or its not all that pretty
we have 3 kids and the boys are into it but the daughter has boys on her mind so we manage the hard thing is to get out with just the wife to play(sitter issuses) we have had a few trips alone and its been the best thing since peanutbutter and jelly
we have so much fun togther you forget you have to go home dont get me wrong having the kids into this sport is awsome too it just there getting to big to ride along and not big enough to handle there own on the trails with all the blair morgan wanta bees out there not to mention putting enough toys in the stable for everyone at this time were working on all of the above and teaching the dos and donts of the sport so everyone can enjoy the sport and not live with a tradagy
from ignoance thats what this sport needs not all these hot heads running 90 in the trail thats shared by others with there familys. it seams its the inocent
ones that pay the price for the nut that cant tell everyone how fast his sled is anymore! just becarfull and enjoy paridise is a nice town to ride its small and theres alot of sleds out there last yr tinkers pit stop figured they had a 1000 sleds go through town before 1 in the afternoon w00t the whole thing in a nut shell is remember your brain needs to be in your helmet too !!! and theres others out there to have fun also be safe and happy trails
sledder mom 01-24-2004, 04:26 PM Hey it's great to hear from everybody. I tried to download some pics yesterday but couldn't figure it out - will keep trying. I do love sledding with my family, but a couples trip is definately in order! We might head up to Valemont BC for a weekend and leave our girls with my parents. Before we had kids we made a few trips up there. I'd end up sitting in the snow watching my hubby-to-be make highmarks. But now that I have my own sled, that would change!!
One thing we tried last weekend that worked great for the girls was to bring some hot shots along to keep their fingers and toes warm. The hot shots lasted the whole trip, and we had no complaints about being cold - which was good, cuz we took the scenic route home - that's what happens when you have a gps you want to play with - does this thing really work? Let's find out! It did, and we got back to the truck just fine (but a little later than planned...).
And hey - it's finally snowing near Edmonton! It seriously looked like spring last week, which is not normal for us in January. This is good though - means we won'thave to travel so far to find good snow!
Take care! :p
jacqui583 01-24-2004, 04:47 PM Trailblazer and I have three kids between us. We started out when they were younger by pulling the caboose, then as the oldest one got his license the other two just rode on the back with us in seatjacks. Now everyone rides their own sled. It's a great family sport; gets us out of the house in the winter and doing something fun together. :inlove:
phat_cat800 01-24-2004, 05:17 PM Most of the time I go sledding its with my dad and brother. Its about the only time me and my brother get together beside a few times through the year. But this year he is working alot and bad hours so it doesn't look to good for getting many trips with him
sleddinfool 01-24-2004, 09:18 PM When I was married, I tried to at least get my wife to take our older daughter with us she always said no, we are not going. She had a newer sled no problem, but never wanted to go. I have bought a two up sled as I did not let this divorce slow me down. I got the kids (3 and 7) out on it and they love it. I picked them up tonight and they want to know when we are going snowmobiling again.. I just got back from a trip to Canada and rode 800 miles in five days, the sled is now broken in. Kevin
Mikadoo 01-24-2004, 10:27 PM Sledding with the family? Oh my god no!!! w00t
paul yarek 01-24-2004, 11:11 PM most of my miles are with my 17 year old son. he started out with a 1974 yamaha gp 246. in 99 he bought himself a 96 ski-doo 380 {i liked riding that sled myself} and then in the fall of 2001 he bought a 2000 mxz 440 fan which was a fantastic sled. now my son has a 500 mxz and i have found out that if it looks like i can catch him i am about to blow a corner, he is real good at setting you up to taste the rhubarb.
sawman 01-25-2004, 01:14 AM Tempest and I have been riding together so long I think she can tell when I'm
going to break wind.
The Hossman 01-25-2004, 01:23 AM I hate to be pessimistic but I kind of feel badly for you 'family' types that I see out every weekend. Because I ride with a group of guys - mature guys, who ride sensibly and respect others. And every weekend I see a bunch a dill-holes who insist on ruining a great Saturday afternoon by riding like they own the trails. So, I know that when my group is getting passed and roosted on, the families out there must be scared to death when the racer wannabe's fly by you with no regard for your or your children's lives.
Personally, I have no problem with tailing a slow group (not to say that family = slow..) until they know I'm behind them, and can safely pull over to allow me to pass. And when I do pass, it's usually a 'walk' past them, not a full throttle assault of flying snow. And I don't have a problem with people who want to drive fast - but don't do it when the trails are busy!! Seems like common sense, doesn't it?
From the number of close calls that I've had over the years (knock on wood), I myself would be apprehensive to take children out for a weekend ride. It's really a shame that it's come to that.
sawman 01-25-2004, 01:31 AM hossman can't agree with you more. It has been progressively getting worst the past few years. There seems to be a lack of respect that never use to be there.
smclelan 01-25-2004, 11:58 AM Wife hates snowmobiling, says she can't stay warm. I have bought her good Choko clothing, oh well. Both my daughters love the sport and we get out when ever we can. They have been sledding with me for several years and can travel along at a good pace on their own sled(92 EXT). We always have a good time and I look forward to our time together.
sledder mom 02-15-2004, 09:47 PM :D Hi everyone. What a gorgeous day it was for riding today! We were out at the Alberta Beach Snowmobile Races. The turnout was great, as the weather was a sunny plus 2 degrees outside. We set our lawn chairs and bbq on top of the snwomobile trailer and watched the sleds speed by all afternoon. Ever load up a picnic table with too many people on one side? Well, same goes with a snowmobile trailer! Too many of us were standing on the back and all of a sudden the trailer started to flip up. Did we scramble! But, we saved the bbq, and the mustard even landed right side up. Whew! Anyways, it was a good day for the whole family. The kids built an fort in the snow, everyone did some sledding, and we all had fun.
Take care!
Nadine
most of my family rides. so we do a lot of riding together on the weekends. mostly 150 mile runs. its ussually on the weekdays that i get together with the boys and get a good long ride in.
highlandergerman 02-16-2004, 10:51 PM We sled as a family home in mn, but we also go out to mt,wy,id,oregon to go sledding. we pick a spot, rent a house then go and have a good time.
WKinneIII 02-16-2004, 11:23 PM I ride arround the house with my youngest brother on his ski whiz, when i say around the house we have 80 acres of feilds ant woods with trails throug em. My dad took my sled out a few times but he just had back surgery so he doesn't do it much, my oldest bro has ridden my sled once, my little sister occasionally will ride along on the back with my youngest brother. My brother under me is too ignorant to opperate a vecle other than a lawn mower. And my mom had enough after one trip on the back of my ultra down the driveway. I think My oldest brother, and dad would prolly all ride if they could afford a sled but as of right now they cant so they don't. My GirlFriend got me into riding and her dad used to race enduro, and is now on a pit crew, and her mom goes very occasionally. Either way its great fun, but i think the best fun is ridin my ultra while my youngest brother tools around on the ski whiz.

Here's the family waving a big hello to SW.
Jacqui out front on her Formula Deluxe.
Danielle on her Formula S.
Stephen on his Enticer
Danielle's Boyfriend, Ryan on my Legend.
Cody on his Formula SLS.
As Jacqui said, we all love this winter-time obsession.
It's a good thing when you can get teenagers wanting to spend time with their parents. It's a great way to keep the family together. Yes expensive, but definitely worth it. Just ask someone that's run up huge bail bond and legal fees trying to keep their kids out of jail when unfortunately they made some wrong decisions because they were influenced by the wrong friends.
Last Sunday Danielle had to attend a wedding so we invited Jacqui's Mom along to ride Danielle's sled. She had a ball.
With the young ones exposed to riding with our example, they get the idea that there is a time and place for everything. Safety always has to be the first consideration.
They also develop a sense of responsibility to help out with the trail work so that not only they, but also others can enjoy what so many take for granted.

trailblazer 02-17-2004, 04:13 AM Here's my son, Cody with the Trail Patrol vest on, Paul Yarek's son, PJ, Jacqui and Paul when we met up for a ride this January.
Sorry Paul. I forgot all about posting this pic.

trailblazer 02-17-2004, 04:18 AM Here's the Yarek Stable.
TheWolf 02-18-2004, 01:15 AM I've done some riding by myself, but the vast majority has been with my wife and daughter along. I introduced my wife to motorsports, she was a deprived child who'd never been on so much as a minibike. :) Took some time, but now she roosts the trails pretty good. Our daughter is 14 and started on her own sled this year. Back to going slow.
The danger of meeting 'Ricky Racer Wannabee' on the trails is something I've given a lot of thought to. I finally decided life is not without risk, and we'll just do everything we can to prevent a catastrophe and go on living. If some snow for brains hurts my kid due to wreckless riding though, hopefully temporary insanity will get me off from pummeling him into hamburger :p
I was heartened this year though, with the good snow most everyone we met on the trails was reasonable and courteous (aside from the rental sleds, when you see those people coming get of the trail!! :D ) Most of the loud pipes-watch me lift my skis doofii were hanging around near the lots and bars.
reimagal 02-18-2004, 10:14 AM Sled family here! We are looking forward to going out this weekend. The two kids share a snowmobile...every stop they switch.

I take it that this means Paul isnt going to have to summerize the rev with .07 mile on it!!!!!!!!!!!
trailblazer 02-19-2004, 08:30 PM No fears there Puree.
I'm sure that I'm not the only one to have noticed that Paul isn't living at this SW address as much.
He's been out there showing everyone that his decision to not need a cover because he was going to ride everywhere this winter instead of trailering was a wise choice. He's forever posting trail conditions / stories of his latest ride. etc.
Keep it up brother Paul.
C-Ya tomorrow at Pinestone.

that was a great day too. as for the trails it was a good thing you were leading hence the name "trailblazer".
FreshPowder 02-29-2004, 12:25 PM Another snowmobiling family here. My husband grew up on them and his father had a Ski-Doo dealership at one time. Our daughters are now 9 and 11 and both love to hit the trails. The youngest was on back with Daddy yesterday and we put on nearly 300 miles, not a peep out of her about being cold or any other complaints. She's a die hard already...*lol*
Most often though the girls share a sled...we handed down my old 440 MXZ to them. Hubby handed down his 800 Summit Renegade to me...and he got himself a new Blair Morgan Special Edition 800 this year. It's definitely a great way for everyone to get outdoors and enjoy the day together. And there's nothing like stopping to build a fire and roast a few hot dogs..yummmmy!
Darryn Duncan 03-05-2004, 11:45 AM Family sledding all the way. In fact I think I've had more fun sledding my family than I have had riding with the guys. We got our girls a 120 this christmas and they enjoy driving it as much as I enjoy riding. We tend to stay off the big trails and stick to the side trails where you can't go fast. The 120 only does 8mph right now, my girls are only 3 and 5 so in about 2 years I'll adjust the speed on it. I just have to get my wife her own sled because she wants to drive and I end up being towed by the 120.

One and the same. Figured there was no sense hiding my identity any longer. Now if I could just find a picture of me that looks as distinguished as yours, I'll be in business.
I always ride with my mom, dad (Nimrod), and brother (Machzzzz1). We go riding with abunch of friends and there families. We are not one of those slow groups or one of those crazy fast groups.
coldsmoke1 03-05-2004, 08:06 PM just came back from a ride with my 2 girls 8 and 10 up in new brunswick canada
puree 03-05-2004, 10:17 PM we uncovered the sleds in the garage today to start getting ready for a trip and my son set out there on the 370,,, letting me know that next year he could ride that sled instead of the 120 and he could ride with me!!!!
I honestly cant wait for him to hit 12 and be able to get his sled permit up in Michigan,,,,, just the two of us on a trip is a dream I have wanted for some time,,,,,
I also dream of the day my wife and daughter would like to do the same,,,, daughter is a possiblity,,, but I dont think I will ever get the wife on a sled,,,,
one can only hope!!
