My pc is not reading my Mapsource CD, which is copied on a Memorex CD. Is my only fix for this to buy a new cdrom drive? The pc is a gateway, about 5 yrs old. With the drives being so cheap, I'm thinking I will just upgrade to a new writeable drive. Should this solve my problem?

The disk might be messed up. Try it out on another computer.

I agree with Grimm, be sure the CD is realy clean. If that fails then swap out the drive for a new one. It is very easy to do. I had a similar problem.

Now, who knows their Fax modems? Mine keeps saying Busy Line even though the line is not. Checked my COM ports and they are open, drive is seen and recognized by the PC. Any ideas?
Yes it does receive calls as well.

That's what I did Grimm. Tried the same disk, and 3 other copies of it, on my kids' pc (much newer than mine  ) and it reads everyone, whereas mine doesn't acknowledge any of them.

Thanks for the info guys, guess I'll be stopping by Best Buy on the way home tonight.

Doo, the fax machine in my office was like that last week. When someone would try to fax me something, they got the busy signal, even though my fax's screen said ready. Turned out to be a problem in the line in the building, or the junction box.

Drive is dead. Replace it and take note of when the warranty is up for the replacement drive. Plan on replacing the new one a week after the warrany expires. PC equipment is getting VERY poor in longevity now. :cussing:

Try copying that cd to a different brand of cd then running it. Sometimes color of burned cd's may also affect how it plays. I've had problems in some cd players where the cd wouldn't play but if I burned it onto a different brand of cd it has worked. One cd I found to work in most players and computers are Sony cd-r's.

Have you checked to see if your cd rom will play other cd's besides the one your trying?

I've copied the program to about 3 different cd's, and none of them can be read by my drive, but they can all be read by my kids' pc. Heck, writeable cd's weren't even around when my pc was built. Of course, my drive reads all original cd's with no problem. My pc in the office is doing the same thing....won't read any of the copied cd's. Just need to update I guess.

I'll have to replace the board. It accepts incoming but not outgoing. I had a splitter at the juction box and pulled it off but same results. Oh well.
Thanks
