: Oh No! Drive Shaft Broke Today...

My sled was making a funny"thumping" noise under my left foot so I took it to my dealer and he looked over the bearings and drive shaft and said everything was perfect and I had no need to worry. He replaced the speedo shaft that goes into the drive shaft and said that was what was causing the noise

Today I drove it for the first time and noticed it was still making the same noise - so I called him - he said not to worry and that everything was fine.

Against my better juudgement, I figured I would go ahead and if it got worse I would take it somewhere else to have it looked at.

5 miles into my first trip after the shop - SNAP - THE F*&^ing drive shaft broke in 2.

2 questions :

1. How much is it to replace a drive shaft ?
2. Should my dealer not cover this 100% ?

I bought this sled from the dealer and have put less than 150 miles on it.

deffinately hit the dealer up for the cost of the parts and a credit towards the labour that you initialy paid to have it looked at. i had bought parts to rebuild a clutch a few years ago the dealer sold me the wrong bushing and it seized the primary partly closed. ruined my whole weekend. so i made sure the dealer knew how much that weekend cost me (i elaborated a little bit ) but he came clean and rebuilt the clutch for me.a happy customer is a repeat customer and they have freinds that can be customers too. just remind him of this in a kind manner if he doesnt want to pay up. good luck

Not sure what sled you have but you can goto Browns (http://www.brownsleisureworld.com/Parts/SNOWMOBILE/2001/2001(S2001ZRHCAUSG)(ZR800)/) to find the price of a new driveshaft. Just pick your sled and the part.
I would think the dealer should have to pay for it since you just had it in there to have them check it over and they said it was fine. I'm guessing the warrenty is up  Though they will probably want to find out why the driveshaft broke and if it related to that thumping sound then they should defintly have to pay for it.

It's a '01 ZR800.
I tried www.brownsleisureworld.com but I couldn't find that part on the site for some reason - they seemed to have everything but.

I read in another of your post that a bad bearing caused the driveshaft to snap, if this is the case then I think the dealer should pay for it since you had it in there for them to check.

I would be screaming at the dealer,,,,,he told you all was fine and it wasnt,,,,, Ok maybe screamin will screw you over in the long run, but I would definetly talk to them to see what they can do to help you out.

Thanks phat_cat800 - missed that.

I say the bearing went because it broke right at one of the bearings - when I looked at it - it was the only part of the shaft that wasn't forzen so I assume the beariing went -heated up --and it snapped.
