(soon not to be a...) Spinner:
I just got an 01 MXZ700 this fall and studded it. Yeah, get the taller (1") tunnel protector strips, on my sled the rear heat exchanger only went up about 1/2-way towards the front, in front of that were what I'm assuming to be factory-installed aluminum protectors. You really only need one protector, cut it in half, but you'll wanna trim the front down to about 1/2" height, tapering back to full height somewhere around 10" back. Or, get two protectors and cut 'em each the same length as the little strips you removed. Drill (3/16") out the 4 rivets that hold the rear flap on, gives you much more room in which to work. Also, drop the rear part of the suspension, gives even more room
Plan your pattern carefully, aim for the maximum number of "scratch lines", some will say "DON'T STUD ON THE OUTSIDE!", yeah the outer belts may not be as strong as the center belt, but I used them for my pattern, make or buy a template, mark the full pattern before you start drilling abd then when you're done with that, re-check the whole pattern once again. Towards the end of my 144-pattern, my hollow drill started to wear, could have used a sharpening, I didn't, made the rest of the drilling much more difficult, so : SHARPEN YOUR BIT REGULARLY!
Another strong suggestion, as mentioned in the Race Manual, is the installation of the 4th wheel kit, especially for studded tracks that may see some sideways use (either in braking or accellerating), as this balances the rear axle better, full symmetric load distribution, uses the other set of internal lugs to keep the track centered, how it should have been from the factory. Oh, have some good carbides up front to balance out the handling, prolly something on the order of 6-8".
Button it all up, take it for a ride, and revel in the glory of a job-well-done.

You will have about .53" of penetration. Most will consider this to be excessive.
.25-.375" is considered the norm for trail riding.
Penetration is calculated by subtracting track lug height from stud length and addig a constant of .23
1.18-.88=.3+.23=.53
Go with 120-144 studs.
