Hi -

I have a 1987 Exciter 570 that will bog badly on a hard take off from a stop. It will rev to 4000 and just hang there until i let off the throttle, engine will idle fine like nothing is wrong. However, if i do a nice gradual start the sled will take off just fine. The bog never happens once the sled is moving and runs great - which its making me lean more towards a clutch issue than an engine problem. It seems almost like trying to start a car from a stop in 3rd gear. So is it possible that the clutch is engaging too fast? I checked out the drive belt and there is a small section that is slightly narrower than the rest so I will be getting a new belt, but it doesn't look like thats whats causing the problem beacuse when it bogs at 4000 the sled is moving at a slow rate of speed.

Yes it has all the carb updates and all that jazz.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Do you know if it is the right belt for the sled?
I had an enticer 340 with the exact same problem, and it turned
out to be the wrong belt for the sled!
Got the right belt for it and "presto" it ran like a true Yamaha again! :-)
Good luck!

Hmmm... interesting possiblity.
The Yamaha dealer put the current belt on there and they are pretty good where I go so I would hope its the right one - but everyone makes mistakes. Sled is not kept locally so I can;t just go out and check it, but I will for sure next time.

i had the same exact problem with my 91 exciter last year. it did turn out to be the belt! strapped on a new yamaha 87x belt and the problem went away. go with a new yamaha one, they bite a lot better. thats what i would try first. another thing that could be wrong is your secondary spring might be sacked out? maybe you have a too loose of setting? i actually have a polaris xc 98 600 silver spring in my secondary and it seems to work better than the stock yamaha one. does your sled have the stock primary clutch in it? maybe a stiffer spring to bump up the engagement a bit? could be a lot of different things. the best thing i ever did to my exciter was put a new comet 108 primary on it, made the sled run a ton better. it doesnt sound like a carb problem that you have to me either, expecially since you have all the updates. good luck!
