How is the ice on Vermilion? Safe? How about Oak Narrows? Sounds like there isn't any snow on the ground, but how about the lake?

Update on Vermilion - there is some ice, not as much as usual, but there was about 8 inches in Head O Lakes bay on the Cook end. Little snow, lots of windblown bare spots. Not sure about the narrows, I bet the ice is pretty weak there still.

There's 10-12" of ice on the west end of Vermilion depending on where you drill. Saturday's rain put a layer of slush on the lake but Sunday's snow covered the slush with several inches of powder. The well-used lake trails (such as approaching the Landing) are now frozen and harsh on the skis.

The lake has about 6" of snow on it, but its over slush so its going to be brutal when it finally gets cold and freezes up all that slush. We need a week of 40s followed by a week of 0's followed by a week of 3" of snow a day to make the lake good for the rest of the winter. Since that won't happen - looks like 2008 will be a bumpy year!

Also - rode the Arrowhead trail on both sides of Cook and it was pretty bumpy other than the mile spur into Cook.

Bring out the groomers!!!

Anybody able to give a condition report on the arrowhead region after the spell of bad (warm) weather? How is the snowpack and trails holding up?

I might be going up the Grand Marais again on the 18th - hope the trails are still worth it!
