R1's have slightly better port angles, titanium valves versus stainless. A different pair of cams to try. dyno here I come

MXZ900,
Please let me know how it goes as I'll be looking to "tinker" also. I kmow that I'm going to install a different rear skid on one of mine. Most likely the AD Bovian Xpert X and Ohlins front shocks. What did you pay for the complete motor you have in the picture? Does any one know all the difference's between the RX-1 and the R-1? Besides ski's for a track.L.O.L I can't wait to play, that's for sure.

I have had aerochargers before, they work well in some apps. but normally aspirated is going to be my first choice. I also am considering a diff. rear skid.

MXZ900,
* I want mine in August for some grass drags. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif *I saw vipers delivered to buyers in August last year. I was the Sixth guy to snow check so I'm optimistic. I once saw an aerocharger on a T-cat. Was deffinetly a wild ride once it spooled-up. I'm looking at one also for the Rx-1. Do you have any ideas as to the fireing oder and if efi from the bike will fit? This thing is full of potential.

It would be nice if Yamaha delivered them this soon. I was the first one to give a deposit so I should get the first sled. The bikes do have EFI now, just wait we'll get it soon. As far as the turbo goes it will prob. be a great performer w/very little lag. I just can't figure out where the compressor is going to fit.

Would supercharging be a viable option?
Or would that just be a PITA? http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Winterpark,
Supercharging creates to much drag compared to turbos. That's the reason Fastest Streat car racers switch to singhle turbos. I've already spoke witha few performance shops and mainly Aerocharger and they'll have a single turbo kit this fall. It'll be 210+ on reg gas and with race(turboblue) fuel and the wastgate screw turned up 300+ plus wild ponys will sled free. I can't wait.

Oh I know about that, Dogg, but it would be nice to get the low end of a positive displacement supercharger. *Especially on a mountain sled.

I agree with you winterpark if I were to pressurize this thing I would rather use a supercharger than a turbo also. "Injection is nice but I'd rather be blown" http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

They way i look at turbos and supers is. *

I have owned a turbo eagle talon and i now have a pontiac grand prix GTP super.

The main diffrence is that the super feels like true hp. *When you hit the gas its there. *With the turbo it took a few secs to notice the power and when you shifted you lost a bit of the boost. *

On a sled i would like to have a supercharger also. *It may rob a bit of hp but it will give back plenty more then what it takes. *For a sled it would be a real neet feel to have 250hp at your fingertips rather then having to wait a few secs for it to kick in. *

If there is a super system available i would go for it. But both the turbo and super are going to be awsome anyway.

It will take some time to tune and clutch any sled with an Aerocharger, but when you get it right it will have as much low end pull as you want.

I have a fair amount of experience tuning turbo sleds toydoc. I have had two of then. I don't agree with you, the problem arises when trying to get them to backshift. You need a very agressive upshift to control the power & keep RPM's down then they backshift poorly. when they backshift poorly you have too much lag. You end up driving around tagging the brake all the time to get them to backshift and spool up. They can be a lot of fun, but I have had enough of them.

I know you have a lot of experience tuning and I hope it didn't sound like it was a shot at you.
But you can have the best of both worlds with a turbo sled. I also work on alot of HotRod sleds and the turbo sleds will make you pull your hair out clutching them because of the problems you list.
What I have found to fix the shift on a turbo sled is use a comet drive, shim the spider out and use a HRP wide belt (now it's overdriven setup) tuck the fly weights (only to the RPM that you & sled like) Bearcat roller driven, try 55deg helix, tight EPI purple spring.

The sled will come off the line HARD, and backshift like a big twin.

No I didn't think it was a shot. The setup sounds interesting tho.

Also if you don't have the pressure dump valve on the intake box it will act like a turbo brake when you let off the gas. Some kits did't come with the valve, if it's on, the turbo will freewheel if you let off and right on boost when you hit it.

The clutch setup is more like clutching 2 sleds at the same time.
first is more like a open mod 440, likes high rpm and hold it, with not a bunch of force from the weights
second is like a worked over 800 (or more), likes weight, shift it fast.
When your clutch switchs is up to you and your sled, what it likes. Most like it in the first 30~50 feet.

Yes I had the pop off valve on the airbox, along w/ 7/11/14psi boost at the flick of a switch. The reason they work better w/pop off is slapping the throttle shut while on boost loads the motor w/fuel, the pop off prevents pressure from doing that. My most recent turbo was a 670 Rotax very powerfull (205hp @ 11psi) lots of fun. What I felt it really needed in the end was a roller secondary. The clutching was very close but that is what it lacked. I trail rode this sled over a 1000 miles at 7psi, only problem was keeping base gaskets from blowing. copper solved that.

ToyDoc And MXZ900,
* *I'm glad tha you guys finally saw my post and responded. I'll readilly admit to knowing a tenth of you guysw so your help this fall/winter will be needed. I'll have the loot but not the knowledge to tune the clutch. How close to me are to T-doc? I may be making a move to Grand Ledge to *different branch (I'm a mortgage broker). *I might consider a super but it would REALLY take some serious convincing. Let's here some more on the clutching issues. Thanks for your knowledge.

Sled Dogg, I'm about one hour away. I work on some friends sleds that live in Romulus. Do you know of a" J.C. Auto" in Romulus?

Hey Doc. do you do much trail riding?

Not as much as I'd like to. I live 5 min. from Anchor Bay so when we have ice I'm not far away. When I do it's a family outing with my wife and 2 kids (7 & 5). When we go up, we like to stay at a place with a pool, we ride or sled all day then jump in the pool. Kids love it.

mxz i don't think that the head is going to work for the application you want, too steep of a intake angle for it to work not to mention the carbs and airbox won' t fit under hood. cams for sure but might not work with the black box try the R1's but be careful diffrent mapping :) peace.
