: Went To The Other Side
newfiebyblood 02-27-2004, 09:04 PM well i did it, changed brands today.Been riding a polaris for the last 4 years and today went and bought a cat [97 zrt 600] very nice triple pipes the whole thing.there are some things that i am worried about but am looking forward to getting it out. Is there anything i should be keeping an eye on,such as the motor or the suspension,if so please let me know, i know alot about polaris but not much about a cat.Well let u guys know how it works.By the way thanks for all the help before and in the furture
phat_cat800 02-27-2004, 09:29 PM WELOME TO THE DARK SIDE  . You just bought yourself a great sled, very powerful and reliable. The most common problem on the ZRT's seems to be the weak motor-mounts as they are known to break. Other then that it is no different then any other sled, check over the clutches and keep up regular maintence on it and it should lwork great. My brothers old 2000 ZRT 600 has over 5000 miles with no problems and my 99 800 has almost 5000 and still going strong. Congrats on the new sled
BTW about time for you to change you signature :p
newfiebyblood 02-27-2004, 09:47 PM sorry forget that well do right away
MXZOOoom 02-27-2004, 09:55 PM My friend looking over my shoulder say's prepare for major gas bill. Thats he's 2cents. I have no opinion on that sled ;)
92Indy440 02-27-2004, 10:04 PM I am disapointed in you newfiebullet :slick: . Just kidding. :D Good luck with the new sled. You might need, it's not a POLARIS.
newfiebyblood 02-27-2004, 10:24 PM sorry i cant make everyone happy, but we well see if this is worth it
MXZOOoom 02-27-2004, 11:21 PM I have no nolidge on that sled.....But sure is fun to have a new ride  Hope it leaves you with fawn memories.
konkinj 02-27-2004, 11:33 PM I had a '96
- Watch the clutch. Wear parts (bushings, washers etc.) seem to wear out pretty quick.
- Watch your jetting.
- Make sure the pipes stay sealed up at the joints.
Have fun..... this is a great, reliable sled.
puree 02-28-2004, 12:32 AM again,,,welcome to the dark side,,, keep in eye on your motor mounts,,, they were known to break and when you get it tuned in really good,,,youll get better gas mileage than you expect,,,, I am getting 12 to 13 on my 900 triple,,,,
newfiebyblood 02-28-2004, 10:33 AM thanks guys well be watching for all that and more, like i said before dont know much about cats but am welling to learn though
anteater 02-28-2004, 01:24 PM what year and model of polaris did you give up for the cat?
newfiebyblood 02-28-2004, 08:13 PM i had a 91 indy 400 and went to 97 zrt600
mtrsprt 02-28-2004, 08:17 PM I wish I could get 12-13mpg on my 800 triple. I am averaging about 10mpg. Which isn't bad IMO, for a 155hp 2 cycle :)

97 used a different pipe design which eliminated those leaky pipes.
But anyhow, I had a 97, and they came very over-jetted. You should be able to go down to at least 340 mains for most conditions, unless it's extremely cold out, but watch your midrange if you do; I would raise your needles a notch if you drop the mains that far.
puree 02-28-2004, 09:48 PM mine is a 900 instead of a 600, but I dropped my mains from 450 to 410,,,, the egts read fine and the plugs come out a nice cardboard brown. so you definetly have room to play with jetting
CORY9 02-29-2004, 12:51 AM Wow Puree, 12-13 with a 900, that's pretty good. Guess I'd better do some tuning to my 600, cause that's what I am getting.
DamageInc 02-29-2004, 12:58 AM CC's don't necessarily relate to gas mileage. For example, an SRX 700 will get MUCH better fuel mileage than an early ZR500 or 600. It has more to do with porting, whether it has exhaust valves, and how hard it's working, than it does with engine size. If a Thundercat and a ZRT600 are cruising a railgrade at 80 or 90 mph all day, the Tcat will get better mileage because it isn't working as hard (takes a lot less throttle to cruise at that speed).
phat_cat800 02-29-2004, 01:16 AM :withstupid: My 800 gets about 12-15mpg too with my 800 and it works best above 60mph. My old 440 got worse mileage somedays then the 800 did because of the low rpm's the 800 did compared to the 440 on the bar.
