Well I wasn't sure if it was just me or if this was the way everyone starts out in the sport. For all you at the SW ride who wonder why I wear a chest protector
Here's my story
It seems that everytime out I have a little incident that I must be thankful for hasn't turned out worse

Friday - out for my first night ride of the year with some guys from the club and did a full sled sideway slide into a ditch, soft snow, only damge was my heated visor control

Sunday- out for a couple of hour ride on a beatutiful day, 3 hours out get to the edge of a soft trail , get pulled off the trail and bent a trailing arm++ whenI hit something. Ride back 3 hours the sled was pulling most of the time.

monday nite one week later- Frost bite to cheeks while attempting to test out sled after repairs from previus ride

SW ride-Scrapes changing plugs, strained finger unstucking my sled in 2.5 ft of powder

Monday nite took my son (3)out for a short ride after work. After the sled rolled back off the trailer onto my leg, pinning me under the track until I pushed it off. Glad I had my sled pants and boots on. He fell asleep 5 minutes out

Tonite- took my daughter(6) out for what could be one of the last chances for a local ride. Thinks went well and we were heading home after a run up the canal to Lake Simcoe when we were running the ditch back to the trail. We were coming outto get on the shoulder when betwwen the ice the angle and not wanting to run out onto the road I rolled the sled. Injuries- strained shoulder, hip pinter and strained calf(??), My daughter okay, small crack in the windshield and enlarged the crack inthe hood. She says she will ride with me again

Just hope the shoulder is up for a ride tomorrow morning

Don't feel that I am reckless but I am glad I didn't sink 10,000 into a new sled

James, I am glad you are OK for the most part. Sleds can be fixed or replace. A life can not be replaced.
BTW, Do you think I could take out a life insurance policy on you??? J/K....lol
I am glad it was not more serious.

Tell me you don't run a studded track   Either way that had to hurt. Did your son just stand there asking, "are you ok daddy???" Don't start riding motorcycles, your wife might have to take out a bigger insurance policy on you :D

You might be better off getting your kids their own sleds, they would be a whole lot safer.

Yes the track is studded but they are well used and there are only 96. My son was in the van he doesn't like how loud it is without his helmet on.

Good thing it's just minor scratches hope things get better from here. Is that you first sled? If so its not completely unheard of to have a few dingers.

When I first got back into it (I'd ridden some as a kid), I had some similar mishaps but yes it too was a cheaper sled altough not nearly as fast (Indy Trail).

It's all part of learning. The last one which was 1 month after I bought my brand new XC700. Stupidly screaming though a field at about 80mph behind the rest of the group in the snow dust. I hit a bump that ended up starting me fish tailing and I rolled it while still doing 70 or so. Oh ya, that one hurt, but as with each of my accidents I learned from it and I've never made the same mistake twice.

A friend of mine had never ridden before at all but decided he should buy one. Bought a brand new ZR600 then tried to keep up with the big boys. That thing was smashed and fixed more times than I can count. On top of that it was a lemon, when it wasn't smashed it was broken.

Its amazing once you get some serious riding under the belt to look back and think "man, I thought I could ride then, but I didn't know squat"

My first year of riding, my sled never ran long enough to break it hitting something!

Of course, I hope the lack of "mishaps" doesn't catch up with me someday. :D

Got a chance to survey the damage today.

worst damage was to my ego,

next my shoulder, difficult to rasie arm to shoulder

bruise on the left hip and sore calf

crack in hood has increased in size past where it had been repaired before

scratches on the windshield and hood

Daughter is okay :D

Didn't go riding this morning needed the rest and to be able to move my shoulder for monday. Have a massage booked to loosen it up

As xc oo7 says "once you get some serious riding under the belt to look back and think "man, I thought I could ride then, but I didn't know squat"

Sawman,
the guy was a hoot and a bundle of knowledge too. he knew most of those trails up there like the back of his hand.

If the event was tomorrow and I was unable to ride (due to injury or needed sled repair I would leave tonite just to spend time with the people I met there. I have already packed my extension cord for the block heater for next winter in Cochrane

How fast do you guys ride on steep angles with your kids ? Better yet where is your sense of balence ?

Dont bring your kids out for anymore rides. I think you need to spend more time learning your machine. Learn the limitations of your machine. Everyone crashes at one time or another but you are wrecking far too often. I have a 583 mzx also and I know it can be a little tippy, perhaps you would be better suited on a different model.

James - After all your injury reports and damage reports, I think you summed up what really matters in a previous quote:

"Daughter is okay :D"

Kind of makes everything else seem so insignificant.....

Ride SafeŽ, Buddy!

I think the best advice I have read here is leave your kids at home. Learning to ride and in some cases crash is not a great idea with your kids along for the ride. It could easily have been one of your kids that got hurt. Please think about it.
