OK heres a story. A Friend of mine drives a formula s. He didnt buy a trail pass before december 1st. so a friend of his blew up his mach 1 so his friend sold him the pass for $160 to put on the formula s (with the pink slip that says his friends name and the mach numbers on it). So my friend put the sticker on his s and kept the pink slip and thought nothing of it. This sled is insured he has his drivers licence and now a pass with a slip. So the otherday he was riding up the trails and saw the cops up ahead. He thought nothing of it not knowing he was doing anything illegal. The copps ask for his pink slip and he shows it to them. Then he was told this pass is illegal because it was not originally bought for the formula s. So the copps made him take the trail sticker off his windsheild and they took his pass and pink slip and gave him a nice $275 fine. So he said to them. I know my sled is faster than yours(its not stock :D ) andif i knew i was doing anything illeagl i would have took off and not stopped. And he also questioned them what about all the people in the local classifieds selling their trail passes. The copp says 'all illeagal'. So now he has a $275 fine and no trail pass. Hes furious. What should he do? Challenge it in court or something? And just a heads up dont buy a pass out of your classifieds. What do u guys think.?????

Never give the OFSC the serial # of your sled.

Never carry the pink slip.

Don't buy a trail permit next year

Sorry, but I think it is obvious what the rules are. Turn the other cheek and pay the fine and move on.

The situation you descibe would be no different than with a car.

You buy your license sticker and license plate for your car. They're both registered to your particular car. You can't just then turn around and sell it to someone else for them to use on their car. There is a process where you need to inform the MTO of any changes of your vehicle.

it would have cost only 10 dollars to transfer the sticker to your sled..........

I would at least go to court and ask that the fine be reduced and perhaps get an extension to pay the fine over a period of time.

Plead guilty with an explanation.

Exactly , A $10 replacement permit would have solved this problem.
Your vin # must be on the pink copy you carry with you as well . It's the law that it must be on there but as a permit retailer I can not make you put it on . I like everyone to leave it off until they get home and put it on their pink copy it's a lot less work for me .
If you do not carry the pink slip portion of the permit you can also be fined .

I do belive it also says on the permit you have 7 or 10 days to change the ownership of the permit if it is sold with a sled .

You screwed up ( maybe not intensionally)and got caught by an ignorant cop .

Youhave to carry the pink slip I know a guy who got a ticket for not having it. Not sure what the fine was but the cop said the how can they need it to verify that the pass is for that sled.

Thank you Bill 101

I know back in 94 when I selling my SRV I had asked if I could transfer the permit to my next sled if I don't sell the sled before the snow and grooming started

I kept my permit in my pocket because I was selling the sled and in Feb I bought my Indy 500 and put the sticker on it

Back then you did not have to have your VIN on the permit purchase ,you paid $90 and you got a permit

Now with the OFSC great move of getting the Ont gov involved we are all screwed

BTW I did not know we have to carry the pink slip(thnx for the info Jeff):)

Now here is the kicker what happens you buy a sled lets say today,do you have to buy a permit even though there is a permit on the sled you have just bought ???

And yes there is adds for people selling unused permits

Hmmm I have never carried the "pink slip" and I thought its use was to get a replacement sticker in case you crack your winshield or whatever.

In fact mine is never even filled in with information. I buy my sticker from a local club using the mail and it just says "phone in" on the pink slip.

Does it say on the slip you need to carry it with you ? It does not mention you having to carry the pink slip at the OFSC website. In fact it goes on to say you should keep the pink receipt if you you need to get a replacement sticker.

I have been pulled over by OPP every year and I have never been asked for a pink trail permit copy.

Strictly ----Ownership and Insurance and drivers licence and licence and trail sticker on the sled?

to get a replacement you need the pink copy as well as the old permit / or a police incident report if it ( the permit )was lost or stolen.

Hey I don't make the rules i just try to follow them .

Does it say on the slip you need to carry it with you ?

hmmm nope but thanks for the suggestion I'll see if I can have that added on for next season.

It does say on the permit that they must permanently affixed in the proper areas and visible to a person standing 10 meters ( 33 feet for our metric challenged friends ) in front of the sled on it's center line .. I just wonder how many sleds actually conform to this ....not many i would guess .

Different cop different day and a different interpretation of the law is what we are facing

heck even contacting the ofsc on different days you can get different answers to the same questions . It's a messed up world

the only part on your permit form that should say phone in is your signature. All other info is required . If your name or nothing is there how do you get the magazines and such ?

Sure would make life easy for a guy like me if everyone left them blank , think of all the less data entry time i would spend. I would not sugest that though

It's completely obvious to me that what you guys did as far as swapping the sticker from one vehicle to the other was illegal. Pay the fine and get over it. Do it the right way next time.

I have never carried the pink slip with me, and still won't. My sticker is properly affixed to the windshield, nothing looks funny so I can't believe that a police officer would issue me a ticket. Maybe I am just relying on my honest face.

Well I disagree with FreezerBurnt if you stick that permit any where you want they would not sell as many permits....I know a guy who works every weekend and he would love to borrow a sticker just to ride on Mondays.....The sticker goes with the sled and that is that. It is ritten on the slip you must carry.

If the trail pass is permanently affixed to the sled then it can't be removed or it'll be destroyed. That should be good enough, in my opinion, pink slip not necessary.

To further up my last post on this topic :

Hi Dave:

You are correct that the pink customer receipt is to be carried with them when snowmobiling so that if they do get stopped on the trail the VIN number matches what machine the permit was purchased for.

As you can appreciate there is limited space available on the permit for a lot of detail and I too have found from experience the calls I receive from people with questions that there are answers to on the reverse of the pink receipts, they really just do not bother to read.

You have raised a very good and valid point, however, any changes made to the permit application as it now stands also requires MTO approval. I will pass your comments on to the appropriate people and we will see what transpires, no guarantees - thank you again for your input.

That was in the mid 90s,back then you did not have to put the VIN # of your sled when buying the permit

I was stopped ny STOP officers when I had my SRV and the permit in my pocket and they said it was ok as the permit was under my name and I had my insurance and ownerships and told them I was selling my sled

That was then, you can not do that anymore :sly:

I have bought a permit each year since 89

Now with the Bill 101 you have to have the VIN when purchasing the permit

Since 96 my permit has always been stuck under the headlight of my sled :sly:

AS for the honest face comment Cory9 made

Grover ??? honest

Maybe if you looked like Elmo :blahblah:
