I used my GPS III+ up in Pittsburgh NH this past weekend and it rocked. My gf and I went up with another couple and none of us were familiar with the trails. It was a breeze riding with the GPS because you knew you would be able to get back to your starting location at all times.
The problem I did find with the GPS II+ was there is not enough memory. On long rides your track erases at thebeginingg to make room for your current location. It seems to hold about 75miles of track (breadcrumbs) before it does this. Im going to talk to Garmin and see if this will be an issue if I buy the GPS V with the expanded memory as compared to the II+.
We got lost in Canada on trail 523 because it wasnt marked very well and although the GPS dosnt show the snowmobile trail we were able to compare the Map to our position in reference to the roads and lakes. We were off by about 20 miles and once we looked at our location knew exactly which way and where to backtrack to get back to the trail we wanted.
Im now a believer in snowmobiling with a GPS.
:D
I believe the III+ can store up to 1900 track points in the Active Track. If you have Logging set to: Wrap - Distance - .10 you would have enough breadcrumbs to log 190 miles, if set to .20 380 miles, if set to .50 950 miles etc. etc. Also note you can save up to 10 tracks.
The Garmin V can store up to 3000 track points...so in comparison to the III+ if you had it set up to record a point every .10 mile the V would record 300 miles. The 19 mb of memory on the V is for map storage and doesn't effect how many miles you can record.
Go to Main Menu, select Track Logs, press Enter, press Menu button, select Setup Logging, press Enter. Make adjustments to your liking.

Thank you for the help here.
Im not sure what happend, I need to read the manual again.
My current setings are;
Record mode; Wrap
Interval; Resolution
Interval Value; 82ft
Are you saying I can store 10 tracks at 190 miles each?
If thats the case Im doing something wrong. Before we left I earased all my previous routes and waypoints thinking this would free up the memory. For some reason it held less information than usual. I guessing at the actual milage it did keep by viewing the track after I downloaded to Mapsource.
This is new to me, the most use this unit ever got was on my boat and bike capturing Max Speed runs and running the boat from Miami to the Keys. Logging and keeping routes is all new.
Thanks for your help

The settings you have are the default...change Interval to Distance and Interval Value to a value that would allow you to record at least the miles you planned to ride in a day. Example... you have a max of 1900 points and you plan to ride no more than 250 miles...divide 250 by 1900...enter .13 for a value. This will give you the most accurate track for that mileage. If you are gonna ride more the next day simply save the track (up to 10 for the III+) and then delete the active track to make room for the next days ride. Using the settings above you have enough space to record up to 2500 miles.
