What is the weight added to a AC sled with reverse. (97 EXT 580 for example)

How difficult is it to remove reverse and do I need to buy any new parts?

Can I sell the reverse for a profit?

Many of the used sleds I am considering have this feature and I dont need it!

Not a big deal to remove of you have the stock chain / idler / tennsioner hardware and cover. It only adds approx 10-12 lbs and since it would be worth very little used IMHO I would leave it on and enjoy not having to pull your sled around.
Once most folks have had reverse very few would ever go without it again.........ME INCLUDED!!

To swap from reverse to the regular chaincase you will need to have the parts that Rick listed. The added weight isn't noticable or will be enough to slow you down. As far as selling I doubt you will get to much out of a used reverse chaincase so you might as well have it and enjoy it.

Sorry Rick, but I am one of the few that can do without it.

I took the reverse out of my T-Cat and all of the goodies came in at ~14lbs. Similar in reduction to removing the silencer that everyone seems to what removed for the weight., (mine is changed out too). I had the reverse for 1 year and still did not use it. Removing it also gives a better range of gearing options.

For me the reverse was just more weight and rotating mass. But it is all in a box in the garage if I ever decide to get rid of the Thunder.

Just depends on what style of riding you want to do....and making sure you never have to back up!!

I put it on mine, and I love it. It wasnt cheap about $400 Cdn. but worth every penny in my opinon to avoid slugging the sled around when you go down the wrong trail etc.
However if you dont want it its easy to remove, need a new outside chain case, bottom gear, possibly a chain or differnt top gear. So if your back still feels young and you think you need to lose the weight , go for it.

HEY!!!!!! Ummm, how much do you want for the reverse????? Very interested!!!

I have a 97 ZR, we could exchange chain case covers and if I do some research on the gears and chain we could swap that too!!!

E-mail me!! zr_rider@hotmail.com

There are benefits to not having reverse on your sled. Weight, certainly. Ease of changing gear ratios is another. Taking the chaincase apart is SOOO easy to do when there are no reverse gears in there. And changing the ratios is almost 10 times cheaper without reverse.
If you're the type of person who likes to tinker, who wants to have you sled set-up for acceleration one day, and top speed another, get rid of the reverse.
It should also be worth a fair dollar used, as a reverse kit is expensive to buy new.

To eliminate it, you'll need a new chaincase cover, whatever bottom gear you decide to go with, and maybe a new chain. The top gear can still be used, as can the chain tensioner. It's very cheap to do, and you could just keep the reverse kit to reinstall when you go to sell the machine.

I took reverse out of my 97 ZRT 600 and have not missed it yet.

I used the automatic chain tensioner that was with the reverse system when I put it back together.

You may just have to get a new chain, I did, I went from a 23/40 to a 20/39 and went from a 72 pitch to a 70 pitch chain.

Thanks for the replys everyone.

I dont mind getting off the sled once in a while to turn it around. I usually look for a big enough area to turn around.

If AC had a virtually weightless system like ski doos RER I would want it but I just see AC's reverse as more weight and parts to fail.

ZR Rider - I do not currently own a snowmobile with reverse. I'm looking for new sleds and came across alot of Cougars, EXT 580's and even a few ZR580's with reverse. If I buy one with reverse you can have it for cheap!
