It has a new motor, good job done, good alignment, rebuilt clutches, and redone jetting, and the thing has no snap from a stop. If stopped, and whack it, it revs nice and fast to 8000 but really doesn't move at all. my MXZ583 does a 20 foot wheely in the same time. Why is this thing not getting going?? track is free, everything has been checked. Owner has also said it likes to rev 9000 all day as soon as it gets moving.. What about your ZR's???

Low-end torque was never one of that sled's strong points. Blame the size of the carbs. They are slightly oversized for that engine which makes more top end horsepower, but low-end torque suffers. The pre-1994 580 engine had smaller VM38 carbs which made it snappier off the line but had less top-end horsepower. You cannot compare it to an MXZ 583. That Rotax engine has RAVE valves which give it a much stronger low-end.
The bottom line is if you want low-end torque, buy a different sled.

What kind of shape is the belt in? It should be setting about 1/16-1/8" up in the secondary. I blew one of my belts and had a horrible spare which sat down in the secondary and the performance SUCKED, especially on the low-end. I suggest spending the money and getting the proper cat belt.

No reeds, APV's and the large carbs are the true kiiler of the older piston port engines. My 93 ZR 440 suffers from the same problem. Once up to speed it has very small power window. In the trails if jetted, clutched and throttled properly it will run with any of the newer sleds but of the line it will see nothing but tail lights.

in reply to you all, there is a new belt and it is set up right. This thing will be beaten off the line to 50mph by a 92 jag 440 with a single carb. Is there a setup that works on this to help the pickup?

I HAD A 1995 ZR580 EFI IT WOULD NEVER PULL THE SKI'S OFF THE GROUND BUT THAT IS THE WAY I HAD IT SET UP. IF IT REV'S GOOD TO ABOUT 8000 RPM'S THEN SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR CLUTCHING. FIRST CHECK YOUR BELT MAKE SURE ITS THE RIGHT SIZE. NEXT MAKE SURE IT STICKS OUT OF THE SECONDARY ABOUT 1/16" TO 1/18" IF ALL THIS CHECKS OUT LIKE YOU SAID, REPLACE THE SECONDARY SPRING CHEAP ONLY ABOUT 12.00 AND ABOUT 20 MIN. WORTH OF WORK.

THESE SLED'S WHERE MADE TO CORNER LIKE THEY WHERE ON RAILS, SO YOU NEED TO LOOSEN UP YOUR LIMITER STRAP TO TRANSFER MORE WEIGHT.

WHEN MY BROTHERN LAW PURCHASED THIS SLED FROM ME THE FIRST THING HE DID WAS TO PUT IN A D&D CLUTCH KIT AND LOOSEN UP THE LIMITER STRAP AND IT PULLED THE SKI'S ALL DAY.

JUST CHECK A FEW MORE THINGS AND I THINK YOU WILL FIGURE IT OUT

I would also opt for a new primary spring, double check that it has the proper clutch wts and helix along with which hole the secondary springs in. Is it jetted properly?

Does anyone know the right spring colors and helix #s and secondary holes?
Thanks in advance//

Stock the 94 ZR 580 came with yellow spring 53 degree helix in the secondary. In the primary was some 47.5 gram weights and a yellow/green spring. Not sure what hole the secondary should be in though.

Middle hole. Primary spring is green with yellow dot, which I though made it a green / yellow spring.

If the engine revs up and the sled doesn't move then it is probably clutch related. The 94 should rev to 8400 - 8500 and engage at 5000. If the guy was revving to 9000 and the motor and exhaust was stock, then the clutching was way off, or something else was wrong. That would be a good way to wreck the motor and cause a big loss of power. My 94 will pull the skis for a long while from a standing start. This is amplified by the long travel suspension I have in it, but it does pull pretty well. I installed a roller cover on the secondary last winter, but that did not impact the wheelie situation. If everything is working right it should snap your neck fairly well if you get a good hook up.

I say clutches myself,,, I would look at the driven clutch,,, does the belt sit just above the top of the sheaves???? or does it sit down in the clutch,,,

Yes your right, I was getting those off of browns leisure world and in the brief description of the spring it was the yellow/green but when you click on it to get the price it is the green/yellow  . SO THE SPRING IN THE SECONDARY IS A GREEN/YELLOW.
