My girlfriend is looking at a 98 zr600 efi limited edition and I was wondering if there where any problems with that model, or if it is a good sled? 1100 miles and $2900 for the price with a limited warranty yet. thanks

IMO; it should be in perfect condition for the price you quoted.
Good sled though.
Good sled. Had it's problems on some models.
The 98 ZR LE is identical to the 98 Power Special LE (Except for the 136 track)
My buddy has a 98 PS600. Runs great now, and I mean great.
Problems he has had.
Blew PTO Cylinder. - Warranty Recall
Cracked front frame - although he is 6'5" Big job to replace.
Blew Stator - 700 beans
Blew Crank - 1500 beans
Blew shocks in track - 400 beans
Now has 5000 miles, runs great. has D&D Clutch kit, WolfPack Reeds and ACT Fox all around.
But he has spent a lot of money on it.
Your call. I would stay away from the 98's unless you get a solid warranty.

:withstupid: When they are working they are a really nice sled. There was a piston recall on them too. We had a 98 carb 600 and in under 4000 miles went through 2 engines (1 blow up completely took everything except bottom crack base), 1 track, driveshaft bearing, clutch problems and the headlight fell out. I have ment other that had nothing but problems with their 600's to and then also others that have been flawless. 98 was the first year for the 600 engine and it did have its inital bugs.

There was a lot of problems with that 600 in 98. See if you can get the vin# and do a search at your dealer to see if it's been in for work!!
Make sure to check compression and also look around the jugs and heads... most guys mark on the jug which side they come off of when rebuilding.
If the sled was taken care of and not pounded it should be ok.

Also dont plan on getting any more then 80 miles on a tank of fuel, they are a very thirsty sled. Myself I would look elsewhere but I've just had bad experience with that model.

Just to add my 2 cents....
I bought a 1998 ZR 600 EFI LE XC 2 years ago with 1900 miles on it for $3k. 2500 miles later I can say for the money it has been a good sled.
I only encountered 2 problems with this sled:
At 3000 miles the Throttle Safety Switch went (Sled kept bogging). I just did the bypass mentioned elsewhere on this forum and replaced the assy. during the summer.
Just this past winter the Flywheel came apart, and I mean came apart. The magnets came off and took part of the stator with it and cracked the flywheel. At 4400 I guess things can come apart?? Anyway, I was lucky it did nothing else, and I was able to find used replacements for $150 on ebay.
All in all I can say I have been happy with the sled, other than the gas mileage (never above 90 mile for me), but there are some things to watch out for on this particular model.

I've heard and witnessed that the '98's are BAD on gas, 80 miles max on hard-packed trails. Too thirsty for me. Speaking of ZR600's, what year did they put the APV's on them? And does it make much of a difference in fuel economy? Thinking about picking up a 2001 or 2002 next year.

The ZR's got the APV's in 2001. It did help with fuel mileage but its still nothing great. I would go with the 02 so you can get the sno-x handle bars, wide running boards and coupled rear suspenion.
