:cussing: Has anyone had their 04 Polaris 800 rmk or Switchback start backfiring repeatedly to the point you can't ride it anymore on the trail? This happened to my 800 switchback the other day and hasn't quit. If you start it, it pops a little and then start trying to ride it and it backfires to the point where it won't go anymore unless you start it up full throttle and hang on. As long as it's above 5700rpm it seems to run ok, but when the rpms get lower it starts it's backfiring again and you can't go any further. The dealer initially thought it was carburation and looked over everything. Nothings plugged, it's jetted correctly.
Anyone have any ideas??? Help! :cussing:

Ick that sounds like carb to me. My 600 SB will pop at me if I try to get on it when it's cold yet. After the motor runs a bit, she rocks. Check the Coolant temp sensor maybe?

LOL i think i know exacly what it is. Alot of people seem to buy all these new 800 and highcompression machines. I dont know if its becuase they spend al their cash on the machine or what, but they seem to think running the cheapest fuel in its ok!!! ITS NOT unless you have an octane switch!!! If its backfiring its mostl ikely becuase you have cheap fuel without enough octane! ANd if you know fuel the more octane you have the more controled the ignition of the fuel goes! If you have cheap stuff in there it can be set off by some of the smallest amount of spark/heat! Try draining all your uel and running a full tank of primium gas! let me know what happens.

Or is there a slack play in your carb's cable? Make sure your throttle cable isnt too lose, and if it is, then it could cause you to have backfired. Its worth to check. WL.

Still i say its a gas problem, if you havent checked or tried, then try it! Also on one of my other machines, it to was backfiring and bogging out, Check to make sure you dont have a little leak in a fuel line. I had the same problem and it cuase air to get in the other line to the point it was running lean! Let me know what happens!

:slick: Well, I got my 800 Switchback back from the dealer today. They were able to duplicate it and after dinking around with the carbs which had no effect the first miserable test ride out, the dealer found an intermitant short/open in the cable connector that goes between the stator and the CDI box. They cleaned all the connectors and reseated everything. So far, so good. We ran the holy S*&t out of it today over moguls, up hills, down hills, through powder, and no backfires.....yet??? We'll see, I'm a real sceptic when it comes to the curing of intermitants by just reseating the connections but ya never know. I'll let ya know if backfiring returns.
Thanks for the comments. Hey, has anyone ever had their 800 rmk or switchback idle at around 3500rpm in the mountains every time they stop until it finds it's "happy place idle"? This sled does it consistantly every time you stop for about 10-20 seconds and then idles back down to 1500rpm.

its very common, ussaully from being a litle to lean, just give the choke a little blip half way,it will slow down, some guys install bigger pilot jets
