I bought vintage idiots primary, finally got my spring and weights on it. His was a 96 and my sled is a 98 so there is a little diference, but none the less it bolted on. Now it actually moves, BUT, I have to have it wide open for it to do 5 mph. There is some play with the belt while resting in the sheaves in the primary(side to side play) and also doesnt sit right on top of the secondary. Do I just need a new belt? Is it possible in about 14 miles I wasted this old belt? any suggestions???

a new belt seems to be in order,,, your belt should set about 1/16th of an inch above the driven clutch

A new belt it is then! mine sits inside the driven clutch not on top any more  How much should I be looking to spend on a new belt, I know my dealer is going to be rediculous!

Yeah a new belt should cure it all. Stick with the factory Cat belts, not to sure what they are in the States but I paid $80 + tax up here at my dealer. Their not cheap but worth it IMO. Puree is right and it should sit about 1/16-1/8" above the secondary with 1.5" defelction.

You should also check your center to center distance and clutch off-set then set up belt deflection.

do you adjust belt deflection primarily with the secondary clutch? A couple people brought it up, or is there shims for the primary?

You use the shims in the secondary to adjust the deflection. More shims lowers the belt increasing deflection and the other way around for less shims.

so its basically not that hard to shim the secondary? Do I need any special tools? I can shim the clutch on my Prairie 650, so I know the basics.

Same idea as clutching the kawi, dont need any special tools to get the secondary off.

just a reminder,,,that when you pull the secondary off, shim it, and put it back on, you should have a little side to side play in the secondary clutch,,,,, in other words, it should move back and forth about 1/16th of an inch on the jackshaft,,,,
