Just curious about a few things i am getting my first newer dirt bike a 95 yz125 this week. I have had alot of older bikes from 73-87 but nothing i ever took riding much on the trails in the woods. just around the local area. This year i am planning on making a couple trips riding on the trails in northern lower michigan. Just curious what gear everyone has. I see alot of people up there wearing riding boots, dirt bike pants and jerseys, ect. Do i actually need the special boots or will my standard work boots and a regular pair of jeans do the job? Are most these guys wearing the jerseys to cover up cheast protectors? Just curious what everyone else usually wears. thanks

if you have grown attached to your ankles get the boots. I would never ride without them.

A good pair of riding boots are a must for riding IMO, the pants and jersey are nice since they breath good and dry fast but not a neccessity. Work boots will work (my friend used to wear them before he got riding boots) but they dont give near the support of riding boots. Of course you will want a good helmet and goggles and I really like wearing gloves. If you will be riding with other bikes then a chest protector will come in very handy, roost hurts. Me and my friends all have Thor gear and it seems to last us pretty good.

well thanks for the input so far guys, NOw on the riding boots how does the sizing work? Do you usually wear the same size riding boots as work boots or tennis shoes? Or do you get a bigger or smaller size? I like to order all my parts/accessories from dennis kirk whenever possible, i know right now they have alpinestar riding boots regually around 170 for only 120 so i might order a pair. thanks

Also, MX boots have little room for expansion (the leather does stretch a bit, but not much and when you ride, your feet will sweat and expand), so do the sizing after being on your feet all day (in the evening, not in the morning).

Exactly....... and, if you're trail riding (as opposed to on a track), make damn sure you've worn them enough to break them in!!! If you have to walk a couple of miles in these boots when they're new, you'll probably be in your socks when you reach the truck.
