I m running an 97 Indy 500. My best mph was 103mph. what all have you done to your sled?

polaris650
03-29-2004, 10:34 AM
I bought this sled with all the mods done, bored out, Wisco pistons, pipes, smooth bore on the carbs, asphalt suspension, best 1/4 time of 10.96 @ 115 mph.

is 103 good for a 500?

103 is about right for an Indy 500.

This summer I plan on running high 9's-low 10's @130mph in my Mach Z.

I haven't raced on asphalt yet. Hopefully this summer.

My Mach Z's engine is somewhat apart waiting for the cylinders and head to come back to me.

Should be about 190hp when I get it back together. I would be running at New England dragway in Epping NH.

I found a guy who will sell me a drag track for 100.00!!! He says he only has about 30 passes on it!!!!!

I have been running since 1998 and my current sled went 10.40 @125 last year and should be quicker this year. I'll find out in 2 weeks.

Polaris 650 guy. I did run my rx1 at the Miramichi Dragway last summer. It's alot of fun. The best time for me was 11.10 at 115. The track I bought was worn out, right to the canvas on the edges. 60 footers suffered 1.58 was the very best.
Once last year their was to guys from the island one with a tcat and the other with a storm. They invited me to come to the island to race but I did'nt make it. Good lads. I also got to bye another rx1, I wrote mine off last week. My buddy's got a turbo'ed rx1 he wants to sell, if I can get the right price. That shoud be good for high 9's or low 10's. How many sleds would show up to race at osyter bed each time?

I bet you boys have fun. We have a blast on the MSRF ice circut, but it's too cold.

Asphalt is similar to ice, except it's bracket racing. what fun it must be w00t

Hey guys I was wondering what all I could do to my 500 now. I was getting info from polaris indy 500, but you guys removed him. He was really helping me! Can anyone tell me what else i could do to get my sled goin faster?

Hey 1XR, those two guys you met on the Island I know them and they have helped me out ALOT!! It depends on the week-end at Oyster Bed, but I have seen up to 30 bikes/sleds. I am now in Fredericton, hope to run at Miramichi this year-might see you there!! A couple of us are trying to put together a Bike/Sled week-end at oyster bed around august this year, will let you know if we can get organized!!

My asphalt season is starting this saturday cant wait !! I believe after some tuning my Machz 925 will be running 9.2's-9.3 140's we will see it ran 9.9's 128 last summer as a ported 800? Now its race ported and a little lighter plus 10.5" track alot less rolling weight. Let us know how you do this summer as it goes.

All right you guys I'm ready to convert to asphalt. I was just curios where all of you buy your equipment from. I have a 700 mxz that i've been grass dragging and doing radar runs with, but the races are far and few between, and I have a 1/4 mile drag strip 30 min from the house. Any information or tips would be greatly appreiated. If any one has any decent used skis or tracks forsale let me know.
Thanks, Andy SWRules

kragar
04-12-2004, 01:17 PM
Andy, there are lots of used tracks around. If you buy new then get the narrow 10.5 wide track. Add wheels between the slide rails and don't run any on the outside with either track.
As far as skiis go. You can make your own. 3 1/2 flat aluminum for the sides and put idlers wheels in for your wheels or look for an auto parts store that carries the DARCOR caster wheels part # W-PLE-404. They are a bearing wheel that are made for asphalt shiis. They are $50CAN each here. 4 wheels and some alum and you have brand new skiis.

So without a tach couldnt attempt to dial the 925 in plus 60ft was 1.69 not good as you know .3 off from last year and pretty much all the way down track 6.5 660@109 and 10.32 127 , I am running tom. have all the bugs fixed hope to get into the 9's at least ? good luck

Polaris 650 ,have you run on the Sydney track in Cape Breton .Normally
between 20 or more sleds at each drag racing meet.I think there is
5 bracket bashes this summer , I have seen guy`s from the Island there a
couple of times (P.E.I.) that is. I used to run for three summers but it hard
with work ,sure would love to get the new Firecat out there though.
Cape Breton Stock.....................In `96 ran a 95 600 ZRT (stock bore
no porting ...just pipes D.D. triple race..turned 118.4 best at 11.22 )
This was a basic sled with a very aggresive trail set up in it..5700 rpm engage
with stock pipes...114.8 at 11.40 crappy 60 ft times for the most part.
Hope to see you run this summer.

went 9.95 @131.7 sat. but the clutching is still way off under rev. by 400rpm , went 115 in 660 but the e.t. was bad 6.42 , 1.62 60ft had 1.40 last year lots of work still.

04-27-2004, 10:24 PM
i ran a 6.08 @111.24 in the 1/8 and my 60 ft is around 1.38, the average was 6.18 @109, but it should be better this year, swapped to a 10.5 track, it is a lot of fun, i almost hope it don't sell before the track set's in :D

Running high 11's on a stock ZRT 600 would be pretty tough. With good clutching, and a decent short time, plan on times closer to the 12.5-12.8 sec times @ around 110mph.

Wildcat 007
05-14-2004, 06:33 PM
what about 60ft times? i lowered the front of the machine down and adjusted the limiter straps. but how should i go about lowering the rear of the skid frame? i was thinking of using a ratchet strap? but that didnt seem like a safe idea..

kragar
05-17-2004, 02:11 PM
The best way is too drill new holes and use smaller wheels up top. That will still give you the suspension tuning needed. Most will just use chain. You need 3 guys. 2 big to squat the sled and 1 small to put their hands in there to attatch the chain.
You want to keep a min of 2 inches under your belly pan so as not to affect the lights.
MTRSPT your 12.50s and 110 mph is more what a car or bike would do. You wonb't get the mph on a sled. They et real good and mph down when comparing.
A friend runs a stocl xcr 600(1995) and can run low 12's and I would bet the ZRT is a better pkg.

Wildcat 007

alright, i bought some cable and the cable clamps, worked great. the machine rolls really easy now, that should help me go a bit quicker down the track :hallo1: i think i need to go a bit tighter on the limiter straps. anyhow shoot me a PM about what tracks ya got forsale im interested in one

No Cat in Crowley's pit this weekend, I've got my ProLine completely torn apart to blueprint it and the guy next door has let me use his balancing maching to do all the idlers and drivers. Run Oxford all the time, Jim Hyde (manager) is a good ####. I always plan to go when Crafts is going to be there and Stanley and those guys. Crafts was in the 5.52 (1/8) at New England last year, but I don't think he's run this year yet. I heard Phil Stanley went all the way to Kentucky to run exhibition runs! Don't know if that's true, but it's what I heard. Man, those sleds run. I'll be down in a couple of weekends to help a friend make license runs, we dumped ALOT of weight off the T-Cat this year and some "super secret" motor work, run a 6.17 on pump fuel and full trail gear, I'm pretty confident the 5's might happen for me, but who knows! Maybe see you there!

I tried my rx1 turbo for the first time on the weekend. With 5 lbs of boost to get the feel of it, and a new 15 track. Times randged from 10.41- 10.57 and mph from 124-126 and terrible 60 footers from the best of 1.598-1.667.
I know with 10 lbs of boost and more than stock gearing that was toped out and some how get the 60 footers down to at least a low 1.5 would get a 9 something.

It is a stock storm motor with cobbled up pipes to fit the chassis. Runs low 6.3s at 115 mph with mid 1.4 60fts. He just went to a smaller tire for this weekend so it should accelerate quicker.
The same motor went 6.7s last year with an asphalt track and only went 100 mph.

I really do not think a stock MACH Z will run a high 9 .
Maybe A high 10. My freind has a Mach Z that was built by Doug Flannery
he has 195 HP on the dyno and is running low 10. It takes major horsepower to run in the low 10 to 9 second range. Sounds like that 650 and 500 is rockin.

no offense but it sounds like your friends machz needs clutching. i have the same hp and i run 6.2@1/8th at 114mph which translates somewhere in the mid 9's@1/4 around 140-145mph. this is a new sled and i havent got the bugs worked out of everything yet(susp, carbs etc.). it should be a 5.9-6.0 flat sled when its right,in the 1/8th at around 115-116.

Ya, you could be right on the clutching. Is that all you guys run is the 1/8 mile?
Looking at his slip I see he ran: 60 ft = 1.5
1/8 = 6.3 @ 109 mph
1/4 = 10.062 @ 126
My sled ran: 60ft =1.4
1/8 = 6.0 @ 115 mph
1/4 = 9.6 @ 135 mph

Any advice on what to try with clutching? No offense taken.
I was just going by what I have seen at the track here in Michigan.

if you do any gearing and clutching try this, install a top gear that is 1-3 teeth LARGER than what you currently run. i know what your thinking gear up it'll slow down right? WRONG, within reason, trust me, the reason is that when you gear up you are giving the motor more of a chance to hook up witout spinning the track, not only that but when you gear up in your chaincase you actually force your clutching to stay in a lower ratio which is more efficient. your better off with tall chaincase gearing and low cluth ratio than vice versa ive proved this at my track 100 times over. as a matter of fact i switched from 23-43 gears to 26-43 gears this w/e and shaved 2tenths off my et. you got nuthin to lose by trying and it just might surprise you. as far as your 60's go have you tried dropping you needles to see if that helped? jetted down on the mains? keep one thing in mind if your not to familier with tuning 'ONLY CHANGE ONE THING AT A TIME OR YOU WONT KNOW WHAT HELPED OR HURT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' you could also put a little more pretension in your secondary. let me know what happens and ill try to help from there, definately try the taller gear....it works. w00t

I know that the gearing is still too low. I geared it up 1 before I went last weekend. Now I have 25/38 . But 25 is the largest top I can get for an rx1. I'll just go to a 35 bottom good for 142. Jetting a 4 stroke turbo is a little different I think. My traction problem was'nt right off of the line but out about 15 feet when the turbo went full 10 lbs of boost. I did'nt change alot of clutching but played with chassis changes. What I learned after about the event I went testing on was a sport compact car event, 90 percent of the cars were on street tires, spun all the rubber off of the first 100 feet. Allso the track people did'nt spray much track conditioner on the track. By the way it pulls and the mph it's got some hp. Thanks for the advise about the gearing and clutch ratios it makes sense, as long as the belt don't slip instead. Also will it make a difference by adding air dams and tapping off vents, it's still my trail sled.

machz1, gearing up may help but also may not be the answer. Gearing up will only compensate for improper clutching. You are staying in a lower ratio as to grip the belt...........if you figure out your clutching then you will allow better grip and able to use the whole clutch. I run an Avenger on my sled with jackshaft sensor which calculates my clutch ratio. on a 700 doo triple I run 22/44 and reach full over drive at about 660 ft - 700ft. The sled will run 125 mph in the 1/4 and only has about 165hp. I have cool clutches as well.
Machz1....get a hold of Dyno Joe. I currently use one of his helixs and if I told what the angles are ........or what I think they are(and I am close on this) you would laugh. But look at my HP and my mph and gear ratio. Its all about exploring new roads. I will never go back to runnning a helix similar to a 54/48 ever again.
Let me tell you that once I got this avenger with the sensors, I started to really learn about my sled. You wouldn't believe the amount your clutches are shifting in and out on a pass. I am now getting a nice clean pass. Just need to work on the first 1.2 seconds.....which is in my suspension. I currently run 1.43 60ft.

machz1 looks good. Still using stock skid or aftermarket?

pic of mine with the airdam before I painted the light weight hood.

This past weekend I managed to get into the 9's
went 9.85 a couple times, mph was up to 136.56. But 60 foters were'nt that great with 1.57-1.65. Who knows what it would run with a 1.40ish 60 foot.

a 1/10 in the 60ft will usually get you 2 in the 1/4

i need to get my 60's down.. I am in the 1.73-1.77 range... I know that is horrible, even for a 500. any suggestions? I have tried stiffening and softening the rear suspension. dialing up and down my front shock springs. I can get it to lift the skis 6" or none at all, either way i am anywhere from 1.73-1.80. I dropped my 8th mile by .3 when I get my skis up about 3" or so which dropped my 1/4 by .3-.4 but I just dont know where to go with 60's.

little info, stock F5, stock gears (19/40) engaging at 5300, rev's to 7k then shifts to 8k by 100ft or so. I have a dalton 52/46 helix, 50.5 gram weights, red/white secondary in second hole, pink erlandson primary. I have tried steeper start angle helixes, heavier weights, a real shallow 48/36 helix, all with diminishing results.

I still need to turn my oil pump down some more cuz it is still using too much oil, but the plugs' color is good, besides the extra oil on the threads. I am running 330 main jets.

This is my first year running asphalt, so I am still learning a lot. Having a lot of fun though. best run is now, 12.42 @ 101.76... not bad for a 500, but I really want to hit the 11's, I know its possible

is that pu$$y cat efi? if it isnt try playing w/your needles and pilots.does she puff alittle smoke off the line? does it feel like it pulls real clean all the way through? is the exhaust sound revy or alittle dull compared to winter time?

nah, 500 carb. I have been talking to a few people, and they are saying the best i will ever see with it is a 1.70 or 1.69 just because of the power valves not opening until the rpms get up. about 100ft out it comes alive once it shifts. no smoke. I have played with the needles, they are just about perfect, if i go up or down, i get a little hesitation. havent played with the pilots at all though exhaust sounds good. I have it revving about 100rpm less than in winter and that gets me the fastest times... I have tried a lot of different combos there, I am going to try a couple different helixes and see if that helps out a little. maybe a 54/46 or something like that

firecat,
sounds like your on the right track just keep playin youll get it. as for the power valves not opening ,that actuallt makes you quicker down low thats the purpose of doing that, basically when you close off some of the exhaust port at lower rpms it moves the torque band down lower to work with the lower revs. i would have to say that i agree w/your friends on the 1.6's as your best, i ran a 583 modded last yr and was running 1.49-1.55 steady.

I was also told that my track sucks for 60' times. my buddy runs consistant 1.37-1.39's at his track, comes to mine and runs 1.5's. I will be making it out to his track for some testing soon, so hopefully I will pick up a little there. I am havin fun though, that is all that matters right? :D
