Were there many mods for a 1981 SS440 Pipes, dual carb etc. Any mods which can be done to this engine or sled greatly appreciated along with info on where if any mod parts may be located. Thanks for your time and info. Any comments on this sled appreciated also good/bad points etc.

ss440 and srv540's use the exact same pipe, so you can find a decent used or new pipe for a srv will work for you, I used to have a RPC (Reichards Performance Center) dual intake kit for my SRV540, wich also can be used on the SS440, like the manual stated. You can see if srv540/phazer485 reeds will fit, or you could modify your stock reed cages for more air flow, but dont forget to rejet! also a 38-40mm mikuni round slide or a 38mm TMX flatslide carb would do wonders for throttle responce over the stock butterfly carb, I am right now working on a fresh air kit for my 1989 SRV54 that might just work on the SS440 aswell! But I would first off make sure your clutches are aligned and tuned, and get rid of as much resistance as you can on the rear suspension, new bearings, mabey go for some oversized idlers???? Let me know if you find anything. You can also check out my WebPage, there might be something useful for you on the message board!!!

Where are you located anyways?

It looks like the Phazer carbs will bolt right on the 440ss . The motor looks the same ? ...... so maybe the Phazer pipe will work to . I have some 1975 GPX twin pipes , not enough room to fit them in a phazer ... but you may have enough in your 440ss ????? let me know .

Try the guys at GPX Racing. They specialize in Yamaha mods. Maybe they can help. They are in Michigan but just next door by phone and e-mail.
Good luck.

Just to clarify, my posting was not an endorsement. I have no idea what kind of guy the owner is nor will I have reason to find out. I was just merely passing along info..

Machine the intakes to accept vmax 600 carbs.
Custom Dual race pipes from Aaen Performance in Racine, WIS. Also, Try Hauck Power Sports in Rice Lake, WIS.
Vmax 4 primary & secondary clutches will fit on the stock jackshaft. Dont forget to extend the splines for proper alignment. A local machine shop can help you. You can buy new clutches or find them on ebay. Also, you will need to adjust the clutch weights accordingly. This has been a real wrench for me.
Stud the heck out of your track because your in for a ride. My 79 exciter is a screamer.
I hope this gives you some ideas.
