: Bad New Cylinder?

I recently bought a cylinder from a dealer. It was advertised as brand new. When I received it, I noticed several "pits" above a port and a few below another. I would describe the "pits" as small air bubble-like holes in the cylinder wall. about 7 of which a mechanical pencil lead would fit into easily. These 7 are located directly above a port and directly below another. I showed it to my local dealer and they said it looked welded and renicasled and that they would be wary of using it. I sent it back to the dealer I bought it from and he looked it over with his engine builder and this is what he said..." What I see, I would not have described as pits or pitting. They are casting marks which are absolutely normal. The other cylinder I had has the same casting marks as well as all the other cylinders for other model sleds that I have in stock. They are normal a will not affect performance." ... What do you think?

Let him show you a handful of other cylinders to prove that they are all like that.

When I first got into the sport I had a small chunk of metal bounce around on the top of my piston and punch several indents into the head, the mechanic said don,t worry it won't affect performance any, BS, how can it not, wish I had a picture of the head but it looked like someone had taken an ice pick to it, all chewed to ####

When you weld aluminum that is not properly prepped, you will get pitting in the weld.Don't ask me to spell the word for it LOL.I used to se it a lot in substandard work.

I wonder where they got it re-nic'd. I don't think there should be any pits or "casting marks" visible in a cylinder wall. A re-nic should be as good as new, but not if it has any visible defects, and I don't think any brand new cylinder would have those visible defects. Rebuilt cylinders are much less costly than brand new factory cylinders, which will also tell you what you are buying. Return it for another one, or get your money back, just don't go in yelling and screaming or you'll never get anywhere.

Yep, just ask them to pull another new cylinder out of an unopened box in front of you and compare them. That should give you conclusive evidence.

My reply..." I consulted several mechanics and engine builders while the cylinder was here. One who builds engines for Rhyne Racing (NASCAR engine builder), one automobile mechanic, and the mechanic at my local Polaris dealer. I am not comfortable with the condition of the cylinders you have to offer and at this time I would like to ask you to return my money, so that I may have mine repaired and re-nicasled. I hope there are no hard feelings. Thank you and God bless"

My refund is in the mail, will be going to Mellenium for repair, thanks for your replies
