: Insurance Woes
NewfieBullet 04-23-2004, 09:28 PM I went today to my insurance agent, the same one I've had for years and years, and told her I wanted to insure my 1998 XR400.
Uh oh, they don't insure bikes.
I couldn't believe it. I had my quad insured with them for years, no problems. Whay not a dirt bike?
I said to her, "you mean to tell me that you'll insure my 800cc, 140hp sled, that I use on trails where I might see hundreds of other sledders everyday, but you won't insure my 400cc, 30hp bike, on which I'll almost never see another soul when I'm out riding?"
"That's just the way it is" she said.
Then she told me that it would be the same thing for a street bike, that I couldn't be insured unless I've had insurance on a bike for the past five consecutive years.
I said that I WILL be buying a street bike eventually, and that I WON'T have two insurance bills, so I'll be moving my business elsewhere.
What kind of a company doesn't want business? I just don't get it.
The Hossman 04-23-2004, 10:14 PM Insurance companies baffle me.....
I was paying a mere $500 a year to insure my old pickup, I just got the renewal - it's doubled to $1050. Now, I know that even the new rate is reasonable, but how do they justify such an increase to a guy with no tickets, claims or accidents?? Especially a year later when it's worth less money??
I just bought a new Nissan Maxima, can't wait to hear what the premium will be for that.. :cussing:
Why they wouldn't want your business is ridiculous. I would hazard a guess that dirt bikes are of no greater risk than automobiles...
03ProX 04-23-2004, 11:30 PM I tried to get insurance on my CR 250 a few years ago. They wouldn't do it. I tried to explain to them that the only place this bike was ridden was on a track, and everyone signs a waver form. So they wouldn't have anyone trying to get money out of them, all i wanted was to have it covered for theft. It was stolen once, didn't tell them that thought! Then finally they said they could insure it, but based on street bike rates and they were out of this world. Anyways my german sheppard now sleeps in the garage, She's better than insurance cause anyone that gets into our garage now will just be her midnight snack, and she loves to eat!!!
Wolfman 04-24-2004, 09:49 AM Some insurance companies are strange. I have Geico, and they didn't even hesitate to insure the Virago. They charged me $90 for one years coverage, and then sent me a $9 check back when I sent in proof of taking the beginner motorcycle riders course.
RacerX408 04-24-2004, 07:35 PM A$$HOLES!!! i HATE them. :cussing:

You cannot insure any type of motorcycle that is used for competition.
The only insurance company in the world that does this type of underwriting is lloyds of london.
Their main clients are F1 teams.
This is what all us bike racers have to go through.
dpaige 04-25-2004, 06:47 PM I went to a motorcycle insurance broker on the web and did one of those on-line quote forms just to see what kind of response I would get, this would be for someone my age(29) with 10+ years of riding experience and 2 minor tickets. If Here's the response I got:

Insurance quote for your 'Super Sport' motorcycle(s)
