Just thought I'd throw this idea out and see what you guys think.

I have an 03 Rev 800 and ride groomed trails and lakes, lots of ice, mostly hardpacked, never in powder. I like top speed. I have been told by BONDI that by adding a "Mach Z" track, .88", it has the potential to add 2-3 miles per hour top end. Now the other factor is that I have studs that fit the .88" track perfect and are a little short for the 1".
Now, I'm doing this no matter what, and I know guys are going to say stick a 1.75" in and it will be awsome, but not for my trails. I'd rather have a shorter lug and good penetration from the studs so it hooks up good in icy conditions.

This being said, do you think I'm nuts for all the effort and little gain, or do you think it will work better for my riding conditions?

I like the idea. In fact I'm going to do the same thing this summer with my '02 800 X. I put a 1 1/4" on it right after it came in with out even using the 1" track. I was dissapointed in the traction with the longer lug, even with 1.325" Woody's Golddiggers. It's hard enough to hook up an 800 with out adding other problems. I have an '05 REV 800 coming with a 1" track and I am going to swap it with the 1 1/4 that is on the '02. I was going to install extrovert drivers this summer anyway.

The short version: It will hook better and you'll have a better top end.

I would think that a longer stud would be stressed more than a shorter stud with less flex, more rgidity.

If I ever get a couple of revs I had planed on running a .75 to .9 on the trails just becuase of where I ride.

I really doubt that you will get better traction. Studs don't just "STAB" into ice deeper because they are longer. They basically can just reach down to deeper ice and scratch the surface. I just don't see the gains being WORTH the work, because they could possibly get you less traction and not help your top speed. i think you'd be better off re-gearing it for your likings.

So how do I regear to squeeze some top end, I know clutching will help too but bigger or smaller top gear to get more top end?

BTW the studs I have now will penetrate about .15" or so on the 1" track and about .28" on the .88" track, roughly. Barely worth putting on the 1" because they won't have much bite, but perfect for the .88" track.

You'd have to do some checking on how far the belt runs out to determine if you close to over-reving. If you are, then ADD a tooth to the top driver. If not, then drop a tooth to get better pull all the way through and get closer to over-reving up top.
Gearing is very critical. Doo always over gears them for safety, so I dropped a tooth and am hoping for great low-mid range power. Top end means nothing to me.
