: How many carry insurance?
Roton 04-23-2002, 09:08 PM I got clipped this winter coming around a turn by a guy who took the turn too fast and wide. I contacted my insurance company and gave them the usual accident deposition. I just got a letter from my insurance company that enclosed a letter from this guy's attorney that he has no insurance and he's filing a claim against my insurance company. How are these things settled anyway. No one was hurt. We locked skis and spun.
revrnd 04-23-2002, 10:18 PM In Ontario it is mandatory. It is an offence to be off your property in any vehicle without insurance.

Too bad it's not like in Quebec, They have a no fault policy. If it's damaged, your own insurance covers it and people can't sue someone for damages. Much simpler *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif *Anyway, insurance is so high that I don't know of many who apply. It would cost me over 900$ a yr for full coverage, not worth it. The civil insurance comes with the trail pass so there is less paperwork, you can chose between 500 000$ or 1 million coverage for an additional fee.
Rocketman 04-24-2002, 12:12 AM It Saskatchewan it is illegal to ride on crown land without a licence plate with corresponding insurance.
Well Roton if he's trying to collect from "your" insurance company, he apparently views the fault of the accident a little differnt than you have! Sounds like a bad deal, and no one is going to come out Ok. As much as I hate the stuff (insurance) I would never venture out without it! Costs me about $350.00 a sled each year ouch! Good Luck! DooZ http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Rocketmen 04-24-2002, 01:54 AM ahh insurance is for women! http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
paul yarek 04-24-2002, 02:26 AM insurance is a rip off but it is a necessary evil and you must carry it here for the liability you might cause another person.
* i was told today insurance is going up for the next 3 years to pay for 9-11. we all know what trauma the 9-11 caused but if a farmer lost his crop to the weather can he charge twice as much next year for his loss to compensate for the crop damage this year ?
NDMtnSledder 04-24-2002, 02:58 AM nice point paul. *I'm very glad that I have insurance. *I was debating at the beginning of the year and now the extra $150 is seeming cheap compared to $2700 worth of damages.
Snow Monkey 04-24-2002, 07:37 AM http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I shelled out $441 for full coverage insurance on my ZR!!
It covered the $3700 damage to the sled when I hit a barbed wire fence! http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Darryn Duncan 04-24-2002, 10:20 AM I paid around $100 for my plate and the bare minimum coverage that goes with it, and then $225 for all the other coverage (collision, upset, fire, theft, vandalism, bla bla bla). You have to have a minimum of a lisence plate to ride in manitoba, the extra coverage is optional. Sometimes I wonder if its worth it, I've been riding for 6 years (my own sled not dads) and paid out between $200-250 every year for the extra insurance and havent had to use it. Guaranteed
if I didn't get it I would crack up my sled.
WINTERFREAK 04-24-2002, 11:04 AM I run FULL COVERAGE *
Can never be too safe on the trails. *There is plenty of people out there who are out to make a quick buck. *Insurance fraud is a great way to doo it! *Sleds in the US have very little laws and alot of GREY area. * I also hate insurnce but would NEVER ride with out it *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
alscool 04-24-2002, 11:33 AM The way I see it is snowmobiling is the dangerous thing I do. *I even decided to get life insurance parlty due to snowmobiling. *Heaven forbid you clip someone without insurance and you will be may be paying everything you got.
performancex 04-24-2002, 05:38 PM You only HAVE TO have insurance here if you have a lien on your sled. *Lender requires it. *Full coverage, too, or course. *$1700/yr for me. *Kept me from getting the new sled I wanted.
I see no reason to insure my $500 Phazer.
If I hurt someone and get sued I believe it would draw off my homeowner's policy.
dooman 04-24-2002, 06:49 PM I carry insurance on my sleds/trailer under $400 a year for all, my mxz700, and the wifes g.t. 600,20' haulmark enclosed. one thing nobody has talked about is if you get in a wreck towing your sleds ,they (sleds, trailer) are not going to be covered under your auto, you need sled/trailer coverage.only coverage your trailer has(under your auto policy) is for others personal property and thats only if the trailer stays attached to the auto.if it comes separated it needs its own policy.I know a friend that learned this the hard way and has a big bill ,totaled out 97 t-cat and 99 mach to show for it.he got hit and trailer became separated, no coverage he is paying the people whom had damage from this wreck that was not his fault.
performancex 04-24-2002, 07:44 PM Now that really stinks. *Gotta really be careful with those sleazy insurance companies.
Snow King 04-24-2002, 08:49 PM Down here in IL if you belong to a club the state requires you to have liability. $20,000/40,000 minimum.
Wisc has liability coverage to protect the landowners and does not require individuals to carry.
I just got a new quote for full coverage on my 01 and 02 800XC/SP's with $500.00 deductible. It was $230.00 and $265.00.
I've collected a few times over the years. Biggest claim was with two of my sleds when my wife rear ended me. I was stopped. She hit me so hard her bumper was stuck in my sled. I had to put her's in reverse and gun mine to pull them apart. Insurance paid about $3,000.00 on that. (She threatened to quit snowmobiling then but that hasn't happened)
I wouldn't be worried about that guy suing you. That's why you have insurance. Worse that should happen is they drop you. Will probably just raise your premium, that's what they do here.
middle age crazy 04-24-2002, 09:56 PM i voted i didn't carry insurance but i carry liability. i have owed a new sled since 1979 and have never carried full coverage. this season it cost me $1600. and i still don't have the cracks in the hood fixed. all the money i've saved over the years i spent this year. i haven't decided if i'll get full coverage for next season yet. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
revrnd 04-24-2002, 10:43 PM What does the $1600 refer to? Your insurance premium? http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
ZR006CatMan 04-24-2002, 10:47 PM Hey just a thought guys.. the talk about who is a fault on some of these... Make sure your remind people you ride with the always watch the guy ahead of you.. caue you could be a good witness to prove them wrong who was at fault.. Most of the people who come close to hitting me are usal way out front cause they think they can ride balls out on the tight trails.. any way.. just something to think i about.. I ride with it for that reasson.. if some one hits me and tries to sue me.. I'm covered.. and theft as my secondary concern.. but any way.. *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/baaa.gif
44xcr800 04-24-2002, 11:39 PM insurance is a must.just because the guy coming around the corner most likely dos'ent.the first qoute i got last year was 1659.i ended up moveing all my insuranceto onther company and only had to pay 243 for both sleds.
slarson 04-25-2002, 01:45 AM I buy my sleds used, I pay cash when I do, and I do carry insurance, not collision however, I carry theft, and liability, plus un-insured snowmobiler coverage. I insure a 98 FIII 600 for $128 u.s. per year, and a 2000 Polaris Supersport for $117 per year. Collision would make each sled close to $500 a piece. Through research I found this is because of bogus collision claims, and the relative high cost of parts. An example of this is a person I know made a claim when his track blew with the aid of the the repair guy, he put it through insurance and it was paid.....what I am saying is he blew the track the end of one season, bought insurance in the spring, and when the first snow flew he had it fixed claiming he hit a stump under the snow. Also people (before pre-insurance inspections) would buy a sled wrecked, and then have the insurance pay off on it. and the list goes on. 80% of the money they pay out is on the sled that is insured directly related to "collisions" on that sled only, hence the reason collision is so expensive. If I lose one $3000 dollar sled in ten years I will be way ahead, and thats if I total it good. Also 2-4 year old sleds could be fixed with used parts for cheap$$$$ I will take my chances with no collision, I will be way ahead in the end.
02MXZ600 04-26-2002, 02:25 AM I always thought that it was manditory to have insurance.
michahicks 04-26-2002, 11:49 AM I'm with you Slarson. I also pay cash for late model used sleds and consider myself way further ahead by considering myself
self insured. I'm willing to take the financial hit if one of my sleds is involved in some kind of a loss. I carry liability insurance only, basicaly to cover my a** if involved in some kind of tangle with an insurance company, or worst case, some dirt bag lawyer. I figure I've been running at least one
sled, some times as many as four, for over thirty years now,
should be pretty simple to figure out my savings have been enough to pay for several of the sleds I've purchased. These are toys, something I can live without. I wouldn't even consider the same logic on a home, or an expensive vehicle used for primary transportation (like to and from work).

slarson 04-27-2002, 12:46 AM Michahicks,
You hit the nail on the head......INSURANCE IS PROFITABLE......in the long rung without collision you will be way ahead by saving your money unless you are really unlucky, maybe just one or two years on a new sled, after that IMO it is a waste of money. Thats why I only buy Liability, theft and property damage. I got my insurance coverage paper today, for My 98 FIII insured in Maine......

I get two discounts, one for multi vehicles, and experienced operator (over 25). As you can see some of the insurance is so cheap it is crazy not to have it, but now some of you will at least be able to compare rates and see what costs you what. I had alot of trouble getting insurance the way I wanted it, but shop, find a good agent and you can get coverage tailored however you like.
Tattoo3235 04-27-2002, 02:15 PM Cost me $300 for the year on a 2002 ZR600. *Put 600 miles on it, running board tapped a tree as i slid thru a corner. *Ins totaled it out cuz it was the tunnel, gave me $6600.00 for it, bought the salvage for 1k and sold it to dealer for 2k. *I made out.
You have to to protect yourself and your investment, I pay about $175.00 US per sled.

Rev it 800X 05-11-2002, 06:47 PM Bumpers are hard...Trees are harder. $310 a year on my '02 800. Its easier to come up with teh $300 than it is to listen to your friends about how great the riding was!
Team_Arctic 05-18-2002, 10:47 AM I pay 60$ us for my sled full coverage too but i have a 250 deductable..... never have needed it but i wont ride with out it..the day i would take it off i would prly shake hands with a tree and the way our trail are *theres a good chance you will hit or brush a tree since we have private trails and they are only about as wide as the sled or sled and a half in wooded areas.. then you get to a feild and its free for all. haha
