: Engine Breakin
ventureboy 05-24-2004, 11:44 PM hey guys and gals
i'm in the middle of a engine rebuild on my venture 485, can anyone tell me what the break in period id for new piston and rings
thanx lots
i wouldnt crank on it hard right at first...but give it a few miles. then drive it like you have always drove it. I am sure someone else would say different, but thats they way we do it here.
puree 05-25-2004, 12:25 PM your going to hear different ways of break in depending on who you ask. I myself run 100 to 1 through the first tank and nothing over 1/2 throttle,,, then the second tank, I run some short burts but nothing constant over 3/4 throttle, then the 3rd tank I have a ball.
There are people out there who say to ride it like always from the minute you get it,,,,
I have a link I will have to hunt down and try to post for you later,,,
good luck
Riley 05-25-2004, 02:59 PM Ventureboy I would take it easy for the first couple of miles to make sure you got it back together right. Then stop and check things out make sure there are no leaks and everything is circulating. Then drive it like normal. Riley
vern650 05-25-2004, 03:25 PM I was taught that you just ride it like you always do and to just not hold it at any steady speed for a long period of time. works for us
puree 05-25-2004, 11:10 PM break in secrets (http://mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm)
take a look at this thread,,, I am not saying I fully agree with him 100%,,,but it is a very good article
triplenut 05-27-2004, 05:40 PM I always thought it was good to break in an engine by riding at varying revs.
eg - start at 1/4 throttle for a short time, move higher and higher with a couple short bursts in between.
PS - great avatar
:D
SHAMARKEN 05-27-2004, 07:32 PM  Here's my break in theory:
RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT............
never had a problem doing that...... :hallo1:
RMKmod 05-29-2004, 08:03 PM If you run it 100 to 1,that means 100 L of gas to 1 L of oil thats not much.50 to 1 usualy normal & breakin on a new sled is 25 to1, which is twice the amount of oil. I mix the first tank 50 to 1 plus injection and constantly vary rpm from idle to wot never holding in same for more than a few seconds. work for me Burnt a tank of gas on sat and raced on sunday and no problems.
CORY9 05-29-2004, 09:42 PM Yep, we basically do the same thing, just don't forget to add the oil to the fuel tank.

actually 100 to 1 is oil that you dump into your gas tank,,,,,this doesnt include what you already have in your oil resevoir and are using that way,,,, so if you are normally running 50 to 1 with your oil injection, then adding 100 to 1 to your gas will give you even more oil for breakin,,,,,,
