i heard a guy say the other day that a sled set up for the asphalt drags will beat a street bike in a 1/4 mile. Is this true? It comes from a guy who races sleds and i have always considered to be a realiable source.

CC for CC most definately. It all depends on the bike and the sled.
Sleds will out ET street bikes and bike usually will mph sleds. Eg. a sled runs 7 in 660 and 11.80 in 1/4 and the same street bike runs 8 in 660 and 11.80s in 1/4 mile.
Sled will probably be running 105 mph and the bike 115 mph in the 1/4.
A street bike will alway play catch up on a sled.

so magic, you're running a big bore on your 700 and what else??? :D you must have some "magic" there to run those things down!! any pics??
On the weekend I saw a bike and a sled both run 9.3's . One was a prostock 1000 cat and the other a zx12 with a stretched swing arm and a slick. Mph's were not close 140 for the cat and around 155-157 for the bike, and the bike is street driven.

With a stretched swing arm and a slick then it wasn't street driven was it.
Like I said the sled obviously out ET'd the bike and the MPH on the bike it what caught the sled.
very interesting info guys....thanx for the help.

Buddy of mine runs 10.03 @ 125 mph with his slightly built MachZ, not to many street bikes out there gonna catch that.
Just think how far a pig Harley would be behind

The bikes will catch him , alot of em, thing is the rider has to be 100% . I run my bike every now and then, stock it should run 10.25 at 135, with this old fat, scared guy it runs 10.8`s at 130.....and I`m not stock. A gsxr-1000, a zx 12, a zx 11, a zx 9, r-1, and the new cbr1000 should all run in the 9`s with minimal tuning......well they should if the rider can pull it off...

thats the thing ... most bikes are not set up. it is very hard for a bike to run with sleds. when i ran my stock machs (well a little done ;) ) but i would run 10.02 at 125 mph and the bikes where around the 11-11.5`s but at like 145-150 mph. but in the 8th mile i would put money on the sled. now when a guy sets up a bike just for the drags then thats another thing. i seen a lowered busa run very very quick. like in the 9`s so an every day guy with a bike.... better be sharp on the light if your going run a sled

You'd think the initial footprint would give the sled a huge advantage that the bike would have a hard time overcoming, and from what you guy's are saying thats about right.

cory, its not about the footprint. I have actually gone with a 10 inch wide track and hook up better. A sled gets instant power from the clutches and the bike needs to shift gears.
Ballsout...it is still the mph which makes the bikes quick not their ET ability. If you were to talk to a car guy about what MPH a car does at 11 SECONDS and then ask a sled guy the same and a bike the same you will get 3 very different answers.
Mach69 is right in 660 the sled will win especially if you go CC for CC and stock for stock

Well I run my 650 on the 1/4 vs bikes all the time. In the 1/8 I would put my money on the sleds, in the 1/4 street bikes will catch and pass, but not by much & depends on the driver, and there MPH will be higher. ALso there are exceptions to every rule!!
