Hey all hope your summer is moving by quickly and painlessly :D The date for the Cochrane ride is March 1 -7 2005. We already have one hotel full and the hotel that is closest to it is The North Adventure Inn Hwy 11 West 705-272-6683. I havent spoken to anyone there but the prices are cheaper then the Pinestone. Bear in mind it isnt a fancy hotel, you wont find one of those in Cochrane :) Also please remember you will need your WARMEST GEAR and the riding is long distance. Gas cans are a VERY good thing to bring with you as the rides in Cochrane are to the next gas station LOL :D :D :D Thats about all the info I have right about now. I will update it as I get it. Hope to see you there.

Yes James, one of the hotels is already booked. :D Puts the count prolly around 15. The hotel that is booked isnt very big and I always stay there in Cochrane. The North Adventure Inn is a short throttle squeeze away.

Well I went and checked the Cochrane/Fraserdale trail conditions on Canada day and here is what I found. I'm guessing the trail is closed but I didn't see a closed sign. Drove all the way up to Otter Rapids. I think I can find New post falls this winter. I'll check it out before the SW week in March. I'll also checkin out boon dockin the power lines from Fraserdale to Island Falls/ Smooth Rock.

What's @ Otter Rapids? I saw a sign @ the dam that it's another 50 klicks up there. The day we rode up to there, a couple of guys mentioned running back to SRF. Is it ditch, road or powerline running? Has anyone ridden this route?

Otter Rapids looked a lot like Fraserdale. We didn't climb the first hill or go passed the dam but it looks kind of flat on top of the first hill. On the way to Otter Rapids you cross the New Post Creek and I'm told that if you take a path/trail after the creek it leads you to a gravel pit were you can walk to New Post Falls. It's a 40 meter water fall to the Abitibi River. I'll be checkin both out this winter. I didn't check the falls this trip in the car as I forgot all about it. D'oh! Pulled a Homer.

I've gone down the road/ditch from Fraserdale on my sled to the Island Falls turn off. Then there is an OFSC trail down a power line that meets the "A" trail near SMF.

There are 2 power lines that I've been wanting to try. Both are only a few km. down the road. One goes from Fraserdale to Island Falls and the other goes from Fraserdale and is the same power line that the trail is on. I have heard that some of the locals have done the one but I haven't talked to them in person. I'm going to try to check both out before the SW Cochrane ride so that you don't have to ride the road/ditch to Island falls. If I'm successful I was going to try to see if anyone was interested in a boon dockers ride to the Canyon and New post Falls. The one power line looks kind of grown in at the start ( this is the one I'm told the locals did) and the other looks like riding the Fraserdale hills. Want to go exploring for a weekend before the SW ride? The road is about 75-80km. to Fraserdale. When we rode down it there was enough snow on the side to go all the way to Island Falls but the ditch was sweeter. Island Falls is about 1/2 way to SRF.
Here are a couple of pics.

This is the power line in Island Falls going to Fraserdale. It doesn't look to bad from here but it looks real hilly looking from Fraserdale. Can you see the black bear?

I'll likely be there most of the week but there is a snow cross in Kirkland Lake on March 6/7th and I'll probably ride down and check that out on the Sun. There is a group of "Science Hill Drifters" that go to lake Mattagami near Gogama that week every year and have a Fishing durby/steak BBQ/party at one of the cottages.(on march,6, 05 this year) I'll ride with the SW group during the week, then I'm not sure about the weekend.
Talked to my buddy from Cochrane and mentioned a party/bonfire one night at his camp just west of the Fredric House River if there is enough intrest from the group.

Kim,

do you have a ride schedule planned? Due to work, I'm sure I can't make it for the entire time, but if I could manage a few days, I'm wondering what the plans (if any are made yet) are?

Realistically, due to the driving time for me, it probably would make the most sense to arrive Thursday and leave on Sat night or Sunday morning.

I guess I'm just looking for more details to see if I can firm something up. Also, do we make our own individual reservations for the hotel?.

thanks, really hope I can swing it this year.

Kim & I were talking a couple of weeks ago. I think for the most part we'll be handing maps out letting the riders decide who wants to go where. No real set agenda for destinations yet.

LadyK
10-23-2004, 06:51 AM
Thats ok Fishie if you cant stay the whole time. Yes you will be making your own hotel reservations. By next week I should have it all firmed up. There really is no agenda, I figured I'd leave it up to those that are there to pick where they would like to ride. There are many loops and destinations, but always remember the rides in Cochrane are always to the next gas stop. :) If you see gas get it LOL. I hope you make it this year Fishie.

I would of loved to take you up on that offer, but we have alot of gear and it is a LONG ride for old man perm, lol. I have done it before and it was one of the best rides I have ever done. The snow is starting up north, it looks like it will be a great season. Here is a link to the Cochrane home page.

PS I figured I had better pin this as the other rides are pinned, even though this section is only one page so far  :D

Hello all, the season approaches quickly :D
I spoke to Chris @ The North Adventure Inn today and the room rates are as follows:

regular room >>>> $80.00+tax per night

loft >>>> $93.00+tax per night

small igloo >>>> $90.00+tax per night

large igloo >>>> $100.00+tax per night

:inlove: honeymoon suite>>>>> $130.00+tax per night

there is a hot tub and sauna on location :)

There are 25 rooms available, but they will go fast as the season quickly draws near. Mention that you are with SW :)

I would like to make the trek but I don't know if I can talk any of my riding buddies into the long drive. Its tough to drive 10 hrs when I can drive to gobs of snow in less than 4 hrs, but I thinks a change of senery/terrain might be worth it. Is anyone else going from the Michigan Area?

permafrost
11-08-2004, 09:51 PM
JasonF it is well worth the drive IMHO. It is over 800kms to Cochrane from my house. There is minimal to no rocks for off trail playing as this area is the hudson bay lowlands. The ahbitibi canyon is about 100kms north of cochrane by trail, almost half way to Moosenee(salt water :)) this is an extreme playground that will test the new gade and your skills. I hope you can make it.

I think you may have just talked me into it, You and LadyK keep mentioning the downright cold temps, is this the norm or is it the worst case senario? I'm bad on conversions, how does say -20 Celcius translate in Farenheit?

Jason this is the main reason we planned the ride in March instead of Jan or Feb, as the temperatures in March are much more bearable. The snow will be set up a bit more too, so less stucks.

Depends on the number of people going up with you. I'd get a small deposit from everyone in your group equal to the deposit of the room/s. If anyone backs out they loose their share of it. Book a place as soon as you gather the deposit from everyone.

Hello everyone! This trip has caught my attention, and I would love to come, but the trip is about 2 weeks to early for me :bash: as i am in my last year of school. I usually head up that way on march break with my dad and his friends, but i guess there are next times for things like these  Anyway have fun on the trip, and try not to freeze w00t

Jordan, there is an annual SW ride every year. One in the US and one in Canada. Next years destination is planned to go out west to B.C. and kidnap Rocketman on the way :) Usually I dont book on March Break as it is cheaper for rooms the two weeks before and availability is not an issue. Maybe skip a couple of days of school and come up for the weekend if you are able.

Hi Mike!

I choose to pick it up in Kirkland Lake to avoid additional arrangements like accomodation in NL and the transportation of the sled - I thought it might be better that way. This means that Im gonna take the buss up anyway.
But I would still be interested in riding with u from KL to Cochrane if u think u can reach it to around 10.30 to 11.00 am.
In that case, could we take an little extra tripp past Kearns? Saw some pics from there and instantly fell in love :inlove:

No problem in joining us for the ride up to Cochrane. Kearns is not on the way, it's about 30 miles east and that would add a whole lot more to the day. I suppose it will depend on how good a start we get and what the trails are like ... and, of course, what the others (there will be at least 5 of us, maybe more) want to do.

We'll talk more as we get closer!

ONR investigates train derailment

Nugget Staff
Local News - Friday, January 21, 2005 @ 08:00

COBALT — The Ontario Northland Railway hopes to have traffic back to normal today or Saturday after an 11-car derailment Friday morning south of here.

Beverly Watkins, manager of public relations, said no one was injured when the 11 cars near the back of the 69-car southbound freight left the tracks at 7:06 a.
m.

She said the majority of cars were loaded with newsprint.

There were no environmental concerns because no cars carried hazardous materials.

Watkins said buses were used to handle the Northlander passenger service today. The train does not run Saturdays.

“Crews will work around the clock to get the line open again,” said Watkins, adding four cars tipped over while the rest remained upright.

She said the cause of the derailment, about six kilometres south of Latchford, was under investigation. Transport Canada was advised.

Damage to the track was minimal.

“It all could have been much worse if the diesel units were the first to derail,” said Watkins.
