im planning on building a go cart and im putting a 5.5hp lawnmower engine in it with no transmission. *my friend said it will go about 50 or 60mph. *is that true?? *how fast will it go??

I use to work at a go-kart track in the summer when I was going to college. We ran 5.0 and 5.5 HP Honda engines and had them governed to 18mph (I think) which is the max the state allows. A couple guys had worked there for a long time (relatives of the owner) and told us some crazy stuff they use to do. *They said they'd keep up with traffic out on the road, so I'd say it would do at least 40. *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

i had a go cart with a 5.5 honda i ran a centrifugal clutch and had a gear ratio of about 5.4 to 1 which is about all the lower you wanted to go with just straight gears and that thing would do about 35 revving the engine atleast 3800 rpm the only way you could get 50-60 mph would if you were on level ground or going down a hill i dont think the engine would be able to maintain that kind of speed with gears that low
