I am picking up a 96 AC zr800 tomorrow afternoon. The first question is about an idle problem. The sleds starts nice and easy but wont idle unless you are giving it a little gas. Second the hand and thumb warmers dont work. So where should i start with both problems? The owner had the carbs cleaned up and it worked fine for and then he let it sit without running it for about six months, Should they be cleaned up again? Or do the carbs need to be adjusted? Also he said he thought the fuel pump could be bad. It seems to me if it was you wouldnt be getting any fuel, at least thats how it was on the old machines. Any info would be appreciated thanks alot

#1 check to see if the spark plugs are fouled out. If that isnt the problem clean out the carbs again and sync em. that should take care of the problem. Worst case scenario the motor may need to be rebuilt. Check the compression if you can. One of the best ways to tell if your motor is going to crap on a 2 stroke is when it doesnt idle.

Did you miss type something. I'm positive they didn't make a zr800 in 96. Did you mean a ZRT just curious. I would definetly clean the carbs out and sync them like atc said. Also go through the process of adjusting your choke and maybe check one of the cables might be hanging up that will effect idle although usually the other way were it wants to idle high or irratic.

picking up a service manual will help with adjusting the carbs and tracing out wires.

there was diffenetly no zr 800 in 96. its got to be a zrt 800 triple. I am guessing there is some gummed up carbs on this sled. Thats no biggy. just give them a good cleaning.

The first ZR800 was brought out for the 2001 model year.
Don't know for sure went the first ZRT800 hit the snow.

Lol, ya sorry forgot the T it is a ZRT800. I am going to take a compression guage with me this afternoon. And see how it is. If the compression is good i think i will get the sled cant beat the price. Also is it hard to sync the carbs? I know my vmax600 tripple never need the carbs syncronized. thanks for the info so far. Hopefully the owner will find the service manual he bought for the sled. thanks mark

Mark, everything mentioned above SHOULD take care of your problems. If they don't, then you might be in for a motor rebuild. Because you just never know exactly how someone else cares for their toys, cleaning the carbs, checking all the seals, and doing all the normal greasing is a must when buying a used sled.

I bought that same sled brand new. I loved it...when it wasn't parked due to broken parts. Mine had a problem with the jackshaft and bearings...the jackshaft wasn't true from the factory, had to be machined after I had about 600 miles on the darn thing :cussing: You may also want to keep an eye on the bellypan/pipes area...my bellypan mysteriously caught on fire when riding in some deep stuff for about 15 minutes. Anyway, if you get that thing setup to specs, it will still be one of the fastest sleds around. That motor was simply awesome and troublefree. If only I could have that sled back with today's fit-n-finish, reliability, and suspension!!!

ok i got the sled and the compression is good no problems there. The reason i got the sled so cheep was becuase the guy rolled it down a hill. the hood is craked and the handlebars tweeked a little, and the kill switch was broke. otherwise it looks good. Now i fired up the sled and found out it idles fine when i push the very top of the throttle up. So i was trying to play with that and when unscrewing the bottom plate of the throttle assemby and pulling the kill switch out it fell apart. Now the sled wont run even after pulling the wires apart. does the kill switch haveto be connected to get sparK? Thats the only reason i can think of way its not running because it was working good before messing with the kill switch. Jim, that sled looks great too bad you still dont have it. Only differance on mine is i have a green hood and i think the stickers are from a 99 model. thanks mark

if you need any parts for that sled, let me know. I have a stock kill switch and a set of bars.

When you were pulling up on the kill switch were you also pushing the throttle closed. Check the little black button at the base of the throttle. Also check the magnets on the slides. You should be able to bypass these. My old 96 600 ZRT had this same problem.
