you dont need a 440 racer. use your current sled just to see how u like it. it's a lot of money to spend if u dont wanna end up pursuing it. i dont know about in your area but in Ontario there are classes for first year racers. u could also go into junior 14-17 which are the younger racers. depending on which sled u have currently u could run the trail sport class.
www.snowcross.com has a lot of info for ontario racers and all of the classes.

Rock Maple Racing and B.E.S.T are the two race circuits in the northeast. They have classes for a wide range; 440, traction, nontraction, beginner, 600 etc. Expect to spend some money on safety items such as a tech vest, enrty fees, travel, hotels, etc. Their is two tracks that I believe are in exixtence, one in Oxfrord, MA and one in southern NH, Winchenden?. Every summer I want to race but I never get in race shape. Oh yeah get in shape if you are not already. I am selling a 99 mxzx 440 if you are interested, I am in marlboro.

www.rockmaple.com Should give you most of the information you need. I live in southern nh and have been to a few events and it seems fun but i dont know if i'd beat up my sled that much, or spend that much money.
