It all depens on provider and how far away you live from the central. I usually get 120 kb\s when downloading from big compagnies and I did get up to 300 a couple of times which is a lot faster then my friends who have DSL . I get about 15-25 on Kaaza, again this is related to other people modems, I restrict search for cable modems though.

Not around here it sure isn't! *I get between 400 and 500k with cable downloading from a good server. *With DSL I couldn't get over 150k. *Everyone else around here gets the same.
I originaly got DSL because I thought it was faster too, but after I saw what the guys were pulling w/cable I switched. *Maybe its just the DSL in this area, or super fast cable? http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

i can't figure that one out, #### Ma Bell and its antiquated country service. *Wireless is only good for approx. 11 km. clear line of sight from the providers tower. *There is new technology for two way satalite service if you have the bucks.

It depends on where you are, like how far you are from the main station or from a hub. A good thing about DSL is its your own private line and if you are close to the main server your line will be fast, and it depends on how much bandwidth the phone company will allow for each line. *Cable on the other hand is not a private line and if you have a thousand people surfing the net at one time with cable you will be slow but its great if there is not many people online. *Thats how it works around here anyhow, here dsl is much faster than cable. *But there is one good thing about a dialup connection and that is your IP address changes each time you disconnect and connect again so hackers cant break into your PC as easy because they can never keep your IP, if you are a hacker dial up works best for you because of the IP changing every time you cannot be caught as easily. *DSL and cable on the other hand you keep the same IP address all the time so you are wide open to hackers if you dont have a firewall setup, and have open ports on your PC enabled but not in use, and if using DSL or Cable to hack you will eventually be caught. *I have a dial up account as well as a DSL account. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Running on dialup at home that has yet to connect at anything faster than 26.4K, so I'm saving for a satellite internet service since I'm rural and there are no other broadband options. *At work, where I do my reading here, T3. *We're only limited by the netowrk and the speed of the servers on the far end. *It's great working for the phone company. * http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

SOON!! I will be giving my dialup connection the boot. *My neighbour bought the sattelite internet package. *We are currently looking into setting up a wireless network between our two houses, and setting up the servers to make it all work. *No more 26.4K dialup for me in a few weeks!! *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

I have Cable here, T1 at school, *T1 isn't always faster, It depends on how many people are on it. *I am happy with my cable modem, I am getting an average of 500 Kb/per sec. on the Cable, which is enough for me.

* * * For the argument between DSL and Cable, DSL has the possibility of being faster, depending on it's bandwidth Cable, on the other hand, depends on the Use of Fiber-Optic cables and such.

I hate to admit this but I created this entire site on a 28.8 dial up. Not many options when you live in farm country.

Just had the DirecWay 2-Way Satellite installed on Tuesday. Love it....Currently downloading from Kazaa...496MB

I am on Dial up and if I get less than 49k I disconnect and reconnect rite away and I usually have 50 + most of the time some times I can't get over 49 though.I have a friend that is running wireless and it is real fast compaired to dial up but his service is down most of the time plus for some reason he seem to get more Virus alerts from his antivirus than I do unless he gets a worm that won't quit sending me emails than my antivirus is working overtime scanning and quarrentining and notifing me about them. The latest 2 were a w95 and a KLEZ WORM that cost him about 100 bucks to get his system cleaned.

I've had cable for the past 2 monthes, I have connected as fast as 900 kb/sec. it does vary though, never lower than 400, I will never go back to dial up again.

as long as it is a 56k modem it really dosent matter what it "says" its connected at its just a number i can be connected at 46 k and get close to 13kb a sec DL's thats smokin for a 46k connection... numbers dont matter unless its in MPH !

no way you get 13k/s out of a 56k modem.
it's just not possible.

When I had 56k I could get bursts at the start of a DL that was close to that and even high teens at times, but it would wind down to about 2-3kbs where it would level off. *I think he just means a quick burst as high as that...
A steady 13kb draw with a 56k though, no way.

nico
05-24-2002, 08:43 PM
The bursts in the beginning you're talking about are caused by Internet Explorer. It starts downloading as soon as you click the link, even before you select where to save the file, but doesn't start counting in time until you select. So in the start you get a high speed, and then after a couple of secs it averages out to a more realistic speed.
