I took my gps to the lake this weekend, first time I've used it since the March Haliburton sled trip. I can't acquire any satellites at all with the little flip-up antenna that came with the 176c. So then I tried my external antenna, and then it would pick up a few, but no where near the strength that it normally gets. Does anyone know what my problem might be? I checked Garmin's site, and there are no new updates since last November, that I can see.

Thanks!!

Oooops!!! I just looked on Garmin's site again, and there is a July update, so I will try that and post the outcome. Must have missed it before.

Jim, were you under a lot of tree cover?

No Art, unfortunately. I played with this darn thing on a 200 mile trip to the lake last weekend, on the interstate. I did the July update, and played with it a little around the neighborhood since, basically walking around the block. I'm still not satisfied, but today I'll get out on the road with it and see what happens. It just does not lock in as quickly as it used to.

I can't believe what was causing this. The vehicle we were driving is an Olds Silhouette. The newer ones have that extra tint built right in the glass. This tint (even though we can see through it perfectly) interferes with the gps signals. If I stand outside the vehicle, or move the gps to the small part of the windshield that does not have the tint, the signals are perfect and strong as ever. Who would have thought this would be the case??? I'm just glad my gps is ok.

thats good to know.
Will probably save me from driving myself nuts trying to figure out the same problem some day.

Glad everything is OK.
