hello, i was wondering about installing larger gears in a stock 02 mxz8x to get some faster top end speeds. im sure many people have done this and have a good setup...any ideas? also what is the stock gearing on that sled and which one do u usually replace? or do you replace both?...what is the diffrence in going up one tooth versus 2 or 3???? what is the maximum gear size without having to replace chain with a larger one......
just thinking of some mods for this sled.....was going to do a pipe but looking at the dyno results id be better off with the reeds and a clutch kit...any ideas???
thanks

27 tooth top gear is your best bet for helping the top end a little. You can pretty much go up and down 1 as the 26 tooth is stock. I liked the 27 better myself for top speed.

Your sled has solid top end right out of the crate, you should be able to hit approximately 110 MPH on a lake run (depending of course on suface conditions, belt condition, etc. and that you have no other mechanical issues.) How much faster are you hoping to get it run?
Changing your gearing to gain top end will take away from your holeshot. If you're looking for more mid-range punch and responsiveness to help you reach your top speed more quickly, look at your clutching options and possibly your fuel/air intake tract (reeds and jetting).
Best of luck to you. :hallo1:

I would gear down and add pin weight to force those clutches open. Gearing up only compensates for poor clutching as it allows you to stay in a more conservative ratio with taller gearing. It will be more responsive as well.

Really on the 800s, I have found stock gearing to be best, unless your grass dragging all the time. The 27 top will get you some theoretical top end, but unless there are changes made in the clutching, all that will happen is that the clutches will not want to shift out all the way. Allot of studs will make it even worse.
I have tried everything all over the map for gearing on my 800, always ended up back to stock. Now, if you plan on runnind a 1.25 paddle all the time, no studs, and do allot of boondocking, the extra track speed would be worth the cluthcing setup, but your talking a helis and possible a secondary spring to end up where you want to be.

Joe has a good write up on gearing at his webite: mxzx-revzone.com. I did roughly the same to mine but I also use his clutch kit. Money well spent, with impressive results! Ski Doo has always been overgeared stock and I have geared down on all my sleds. Gained performance and maintained topend. -Grover w00t
