I was out on the mountain bike Saturday night riding on one of the forest access roads south of Apsley (west of Jack's Lake). I saw a couple of wolves trotting along the road, coming towards me.

They stopped before I got the bike stopped. I was probably a hundred yards away from them. They looked @ me for about 5 seconds then turned & went into the bush.

A couple of summers ago I saw another 1 north of there when I was out on my 3 wheeler a couple of miles north of there.

That's cool stuff. I've only seen one in my life - along US-2 in the west side of the U.P.

Yesterday morning there was a pack of coyotes down in our swamp. They were making a hell of a rukus around 5AM. must have been after a deer or something. LAter Permafrost

I've only ever seen one live one in the wild (algonquin park), but years ago when I was young, one of the locals trapped one by my cottage. I couldn't believe the size of that animal.

We hear them from time to time, that is a neat experience in itself.

Wolves are awesome. Having a high content wolfdog is a challenge, and blessing. I'm sure my neighbours think I should be certified insane, but I love getting Nikita worked up into howling.

Rev, just don't try to pet those pretty wild ones. They simply may not understand that ya only wanna be nice to 'em. :D

There is a pack of them that live in the area around my cottage, I've seen them on the ice crossing the lake a few times and I hear them at night all the time.

there are 2 deer feed sites on either side of the lake and the dear cross about 500 yards off my dock.

there an Island out there that I believe the wolves ambush the deer from as I've found SEVERAL shredded carcasses on the ice, you can usually see a large patch of red snow from a distance, it was kinda freaky the first time I saw it.

No worries about me trying to pet them.

DP, when we rode up to Fraserdale last March, the "remains" of a moose were on the trail & I use "remains" loosely. A few bones & red snow over a large area is all that was left.

ive seen a couple last year at my cottage in Parry sound. they took off pretty fast when they saw me. TONS of coyotes down this area. i live on the edge of town and ive seen them crossing through my backyard a few times. the mange (sp??) has been pretty bad around here cuz ive seen a lot of sick looking foxes and coyotes. almost hit one at the end of the sledding season last year on the trail cuz it stumbled out of the bush right infront of me at night. :(

I'd heard that as well. The second weekend of July I saw 2 foxes together east of Apsley, which I'd never seen before. Anytime I've seen a fox it was solo.

Wolfman, a friends dad had a wolf mix and we would go over and play a record of wolves howling and she would join in, that is the eriest feeling when you are that close and you hear it for the first time but was very cool. never seen a wolf in the wild but im going to the up soon and hopefully will then, i guess they are raising a big stink with ranchers up there getting alot of their calf's.

We've seen a resurgence of coyotes here. My friend and I were out riding one night and ended up chasing one down the trail. They do keep the stray cat population down, though.

Oh, I can get Nikita going whenever I want. :hallo1: The funniest part is, when my neighbour tries, Nikita just gives him an irritated look.

If you want a wolfdog, you will first have to move out of New York. They are illegal there, with animal control having the power to sieze and euthanize the animal immediately.

You would need to do your homework on where you will be able to have one legally, and do SERIOUS homework on what it takes to keep one contained, behaviour, the amount of damage they are capable of causing, the grief that your neighbours (even in the country) can, and will give you, etc. If you like living in a city or suburb, forget it. It's the worst possible environment you can be in with a wolfdog, and you will absolutely set yourself up for massive trouble.

Wolfdogs can typically clear a 6 ft fence without difficulty, or excavate a tunnel under it within minutes. Chaining one up is a death sentance for the wolfdog as well. It is guranteed, that they will become viscious if they are chained. They've been known to decimate the interior of a house if they freak out over being left alone inside. The siding on your house is not safe either, if curiosity gets the best of them, and they find it highly entertaining to pull off of the place.

You will not have a back yard. It's that simple. They WILL dig, and there will be nothing you can do, to dissuate this behaviour. There are no gurantees, that you'll be able to housebreak the wolfdog, or even be able to train it for obedience.

Behavioural tendancies can vary widely among one single litter of pups. How much time do you have to be with the wolfdog? This matters far more than with a regular ol' mutt. Socialization to be able to trust them around others, has to start immediately, and can never be allowed to slack off. This is hard to do, when you are dealing with a mix that people would rather not be around.

If this sounds like I'm trying to talk you out of getting one - I am. Over half of all wolfdogs end up euthanized, or in rescues before they reach 5 years of age. Their bonds to their owners are also stronger than regular dogs, and they do not adjust well to being "abandoned" by their owners.

Was strange I was driving home from my place up north in Haliburton, Ontario ummm three weekends ago and I was driving on 48 just outside of Kirkfield (heading towards Toronto) and I just happened to look to my right and there was a wolf peering through some high grass. Scared the crap out of me.

Very cool to see one road side though!

Wife and I were out at the cabin sitting at the bonfire one night in August and she went to bed. about an hour later I hear him howling (near full moon). By the time my hair on my neck went down and I could go try and wake her up he was done. Coolest experience I have had in the UP by far.

Wolfman, I would love to meet your.......(dog/wolf).... pet? someday.

Just the past year I was out hunting and saw a wolf or coyote(i don't know which but it wasn't no house dog) here in North Eastern Pennsylvania. Scared the crap out of me. It was the first time I ever seen one. I'm not a big fan of wolves because they eat the rabbits, so when I go out rabbit hunting theirs nothing to shoot.

See them intermittently around here, as well as foxes and coyotes. On the drive to work today I came across a moose on the road, always amazed by the wildlife!

Wolfman...I know what excellent pets a wolfdog can make (with alot of patience, strength and understanding). I have two high content wolfdogs in my backyard right now. They are my very best bussies and we spend a lot of time in the bush together. Too bad about Nikita.

Note: As a responsible high content Wolfdog owner I must make the statement that they are NOT for the first time or average dog owner.
