: Minnesota Ride?
F7andZR800 08-09-2004, 03:53 PM I'd lvoe to do a ride for SW, with my dad, and you guys.
Next Winter, we could go up to Voyagers national park or somthing. I dunno, i would have to see what you gusy wanted to do. ^_^
performancex 08-15-2004, 12:54 PM maybe
F7andZR800 08-17-2004, 10:41 AM Where are you at?
zr580cat 09-22-2004, 08:23 PM I'd be interested. I'm near Duluth and do most of my riding around Ely, Kab, Vermilion, I falls, etc.
Let's start a snowmobileworld.com ride!
mudweiser 09-23-2004, 01:39 AM I would be interested as well. I'm located in Central Minnesota (Saint Cloud).
highlandergerman 09-23-2004, 08:45 PM sighn me up. live near grandforks Nd. let me know
bpbania 09-24-2004, 01:49 AM I'm in Maple Grove which is in the metro area. I'm willing to drive anywhere in MN to go snowmobiling for a weekend.
atc250rfoxusa 09-24-2004, 02:57 AM I'm in the north end of the metro in Mn, I would go anywhere in Mn as well.
zr580cat 09-24-2004, 11:18 AM I definitely see some interest in a MN ride. What's next? Dates? Location?
I'd be happy to help organize something, but I can't do it alone. Who else can help out?
mudweiser 09-24-2004, 12:25 PM I know about 10 guys from our club that will go. Everyone should start giving location suggestions and take it from there. The only Northern locations i have rode is Brainerd and the 2 harbors area. There has to be better places then that.
zr580cat 09-24-2004, 12:36 PM I've ridden pretty much all over Northeastern MN, From Duluth to Grand Marais, all over the range to I Falls.
The riding all depends on what kind of winter we have. The Ely area has always been good to us. Vermilion is nice, especially having the lake to ride if there's no snow. And, the Casino may be a nice place to stay.
I would assume on this ride, we'd have all sorts of skill levels, machines, ages, etc. So, we'd have to set things up for everyone to enjoy.
Would we just be getting a bunch of people together to go for a ride, or would we want it to be more involved than that? Have a price so everyone can get t-shirts, etc. Raise money for a cause?
Anyone from MN go to Haliburton last year? Maybe we can research what was done there?
performancex 09-24-2004, 12:37 PM Did a great ride once up the Little Fork River from Cook to I-Falls.
mudweiser 09-26-2004, 07:11 AM I guess its easy to find a place to ride and lodging can easily be set-up. ZR 580 you have a lot of good points,
I doo like the T-shirt idea (SnowmobileWorld.com 2004/05 Minnesota ride) also raising money for a cause. We have only had 10 posts in regards to this ride.
* How many will be interested?
* Something needs to be decided, as far as riding styles so all can enjoy, I'm sure my wife would like to go along, probably some people with their kids, 2 up riders, we need to be versatile to be sucessful. There is always evening play time for the hardcore riders.
* My riding area is mainly central Minnesota, not to scenic here.
I have a lot of free time at work and a lot of time off. I can make calls and research areas, lodging ect...
I'm not saying anyones ideas are set in stone but there is a lot to consider and if we don't get feedback and support it will just be "a bunch of people hooking up for a ride".
Maybe we could get a moderator to pin a link to this topic so we can get more exposure and feedback.

mudweiser 09-26-2004, 12:19 PM Thanks for pinning this topic mxz7.
zr580cat 09-27-2004, 02:36 PM One other thought that came to mind over the weekend. Are there legal issues that we'd have to deal with if we do it as a snowmobileworld.com ride? Such as liability waivers, riders showing proof of insurance, etc?
mudweiser 09-28-2004, 12:54 PM ZR, your right we would have to look further into the legality of liability. I could get a liability discloser for all to sign. As far as insurance, to the best of my knowldge Minnesota does not require insurance on a snowmobile. It is nice to have another insurance company to go after if something would happen. I was on my way up the the U.P. and a approaching truck was screwing around on the highway, he lost control and smashed into our trailer. Both sleds were tossed from the trailer and were totaled. Luckily no one was hurt (except our weekend). The other drivers insurance company covered more then what ours would. maybe someone else knows more about and could shed some light on the topic.
Just a few riding areas that came to mind:
Hinckley, we could stay at the Casino.
Has anyone rode the Bemidji area?
How about the Itascia area?
I have never rode there but how is the Brainerd area?
Possibly the Iron range , Duluth, Two Harbors, North Shore?
Ely?
Of all the sledders in Minnesota i would think we could get some good feedback on a decent place to ride.
phazerhater 09-28-2004, 01:50 PM I'm also game for a MN ride and know of at least 4 others around here that would go. Too the other guys on here around Grand Forks/EGF or Crookston, we could all meet up and caravan or car pool to where ever we end up going. Something to keep in mind.
Mudweiser, I've ridden the Bemidji area a bit. Mainly ride around Park Rapids and the Itasca Park area though when in MN.
As for getting info. on the legality of a SW ride, LadyK is champ there. She had allot to do with setting up the big ride they had up in Canada and could save allot of time digging for info.
It's never too early to start throwing out dates....anyone have any suggestions? I know we could all use as much of a heads up as possible for planning. Couple other things to think about, we thinking just a weekend ride or more than that? Need to know about taking time off work if need be. Since we will most likely be staying overnight, need to think about lodging if we're wanting to stick together and get reservations. Most spots fill up quickly and if we don't act fast lodging may be the determining factor on where we go and when, rather than what we want.
zr580cat 09-28-2004, 05:44 PM I brought up insurance, not because I'm an agent (don't hate me), but for your reason, mudweiser, and for covering snowmobileworld.com. If one of our riders hit someone, we'd want to make sure their liability would cover the damages, and it wouldn't hit snowmobileworld.com in any way. Maybe the liability waiver would take care of that, but I don't know for sure. Any Minnesota lawyers on this site? When I do fishing tournaments, we sign a liability waiver, but the sponsors also require proof of insurance for the boat.
My 3 favorite places to ride in MN are:
Lake Vermilion area - A lot of resorts, Fortune Bay Casino, always lake and river riding if there's no snow on the trails.
Ely - Grand Ely Lodge on Shagawa Lake is a very nice place to stay.
Gunflint Trail - A lot of resorts to stay at. Usually more snow up that way than other areas.
I know there are many other areas out there, and I would definitely be willing to try something different out.
Another thought is Thief River Falls. Then, maybe we could get Arctic Cat involved somehow?
As for dates, when we plan a trip in MN, we usually do sometime in February. We've had January's here with no snow & March's that are too warm. Just need to consider the fact that some MN riders may want to do the Michigan trip, also.
Just some thoughts.
atc250rfoxusa 09-28-2004, 11:17 PM Most of the places I go to ride there is not too many places for a large amount of people to stay at. I do alot of my riding in the Bigfork - Effie area. I like to go up there because it is where I deer hunt, and it is about as far from civilization as I can get.
I like to play in untamed powder/hill country - and I think most others do too, but that would not be possible if it is going to be an all skill level ride.
I think staying at a casino would be a good idea so when the more aggressive riders want to go out and play the others will still have something to do........(keep the ol ladies from getting too mad at us, place for the kids to play in the pool after the day ride.....etc ) - no offense intended on the ol lady remark.
Where ever it takes place I am game.

I have access to whatever needs answered. Since we are so close to the border we deal allot with both sides of the line. Just put together a list of what all needs looked into.
performancex 09-29-2004, 09:45 AM No liability waver--we are only using SW as a means to organize ourselves. If a bunch of sledders all got together at the bar and planned a big ride, there would be no liability waver signed. As long as SW isn't sponsoring in any way (i.e. a charity event or something, like someone mentioned) there shouldn't be any legal issues with the site.
I mentioned the Little Fork River. If we plan a big river ride, we won't have to worry about whether or not there will be snow.
zr580cat 10-04-2004, 05:25 PM Ok then. How should we get to the next step? Should we do polls for dates and locations?
mudweiser 10-04-2004, 11:54 PM I agree lets get this moving. I have never set up a poll but we should probably do oone for dates and one for locations.
performancex 10-05-2004, 09:26 PM Jan 15-16, or else Feb 5-6!!
mudweiser 10-05-2004, 10:51 PM Feb. 5th and 6th is Super Bowl weekend. Makes no differance to me but it probably will to others.

polariskid 10-06-2004, 09:39 PM Im in for a ride anyware in mn. how about itasca state park?? i would love to have a sw.com ride
mudweiser 10-08-2004, 12:48 AM I requested some info about Itasca via snail mail. Has anyone ever rode there? I'll post what i find out. Come on guys lets get this thing rolling.
zr580cat 10-08-2004, 05:58 PM Never ridden Itasca, but would like to try it out.
IMO, we just have to make sure we go to a place that will have snow! I've been on toooo many MN trips where the trails were in extremely poor condition because of lack of snow. That's why we always try to stay near lake/river areas.
Who knows how to set up polls for dates and locations?

The areas I'm most familiar with are Vermilion, Kabetogama, Ely, the Gunflint, Duluth area, Two Harbors, and the Iron Range. Pretty much anywhere in Northeastern MN.
I've mentioned before that Vermilion has Fortune Bay Casino (http://www.fortunebay.com/), Ely has Grand Ely Lodge (http://www.grandelylodge.com/). We've stayed at Windigo Lodge (http://www.windigolodge.com/) on the Gunflint a few times.
I'm also very willing to try new places, as long as they're good places for snow!
If you know any other snowmobileworld guys from MN, let's try to get them involved, too.

mudweiser 10-21-2004, 07:29 AM ZR580Cat- I like the idea of staying at a casino. Are you familiar with the trails around there? Is there sufficient places to stop and eat, gas and parts? We are not getting much of a response in the polls. I think it would be best to go somewhere ones familiar with. Is the a variety of trails, such as places for the hardcore riders to play and nice trails for families to ride?
performancex 10-21-2004, 01:56 PM I'm quite familiar with Tower, Aurora, Cook, Virginia, Hibbing, and everywhere in between.
polariskid 10-30-2004, 09:12 AM how long are we going to let the polls go for b4 we set a date and location
mudweiser 10-30-2004, 12:17 PM What do you think if we give it the weekend and set a place and date by Monday morning? Seems to be a lot more people on here over the weekend.
atc250rfoxusa 10-30-2004, 08:56 PM I know the north eastern part of the state usually has the most snow......that would be our best bet for good trail conditions.....Down with the casino deal I am.
dajetfixx 11-02-2004, 03:06 PM OK, here is my take on this. You want an area that has lodging, fuel, and a lot of trails that you can ride with out running over the same ones 3-4 times. Select an area familiar to most for ease of riding. Is sucks having to stop all the time to read a map. It has to be affordable and the dates need to be set at least 60 days prior. I organise a trip for 10-15 guys to the Lake Vermilion area every year. Phaserhater came with last year and is going again this year. I'll tell you its not easy planning something like this. Since this is late in the game, you may want decide on an area and a list of hotels/resorts that have rooms and leave it up to those that are planning on attending to make the reservations. You will not be able to please everyone on the dates but thats ok. It would be nice to get everyone at the same place but that may not happen. I would then make plans for a meet and greet and a time to meet for a few rides at a centralized location. Get a few people to lead the rides that know the area and divide up to smaller groups. The last event like this I planned was a power boat rally on the St Croix River this summer for 130-150 people. Its a big job. If its any other date than Feb 3-6th count me in. My trip to Lake Vermilion is on those dates. We are staying at the head o lakes resort. Unless you are planning on the Lake Vermillion area on those dates..... :) Then im in for sure. w00t
performancex 11-05-2004, 10:17 AM I'd be interested in meeting up with you guys to ride that weekend. I live just 30 miles south of Lake Vermillion, so it's my area.

All we need it Locations, dates and a list of hotels that are close to town. Let people get their own rooms. Set a meeting time/place and a very general and open daily planner. Buy some off color ribbon and tie it on the back of the sleds to identify each sled that your with the SW MN group. A list of Cell numbers and who is staying where and you are about finished....

Where did everyone go that wanted to do this? Not too much talk going about this! :(
performancex 11-25-2004, 01:58 PM I'm still game, just gotta work out a few details (get a new sled, break the news to the wife, etc.)
mudweiser 11-25-2004, 09:38 PM I'm in. Just waiting for a few friends to get back to me. I will reserve rooms when i know how many are going.
dajetfixx 11-26-2004, 10:43 AM Great guys! I was starting to wonder if I was to quick on getting the rooms going....

Im sure you can stay at your cabin. I think its only 28 miles to walker. Meeting at the hotel. Im going to get a map and get some ideas on a direction. I'll post them at that time.
phazerhater 11-28-2004, 01:38 AM I'm still in, but I won't be needing a room.
Yes, Walker is about 25-30 miles from PR, so about a half hour drive from Walker to the Hotel.

Seven rooms left. Only my wife and I and two of my buddies and their wives have reserved?
phazerhater 12-07-2004, 10:29 AM I've got Fri. the 14th off already, so I will for sure be there. Dave, you guys heading to PR thurs. night, or friday? What time? I may head up there Thurs. after work...
If we end up with two groups (faster/slower) my old man may end up tagging along. He could do laps around Nate, but still isn't a speed demon by any means.haha
It's supposed to be snowing on and off the rest of the week here. Maybe actually get to take the sleds out this weekend!
mudweiser 12-07-2004, 11:06 AM I'm still in, but waiting for friends to commit to the trip. Worst case is i will have to find my own lodging. May even end riding 2-up to get them to go because he may sell his sled. If we are riding 2-up there will be a slower running group of at least 2 sleds.

Probably friday afternoon. I just found out I have a meeting that week in Memphis. I'll be gone Monday and back Thursday night. I'm guessing we will leave here around noon. I took the sled out yesterday. 5 miles, not much but I was out. If we get 2-3 more inches of snow it would be ok! If we go out I'll give you a call. Is Nate going too? My Dad (70) may go. He will ride with the fast group! No kidding. lol There will only be one group as of now. Im almost done with the trail planing. Im hoping to take the hartland trail to Walker and go north.
Mudweiser, Just book a room. You can cancel up to 24 hours prior....
phazerhater 12-08-2004, 06:02 PM Dave, I don't know if Nate is going or not. I would assume so, but I haven't even talked to him in awhile. Next time I see him I'll mention it. Last I heard he was questionable on the trip in Feb. even. He's scrambling to get the 600 paid off I know so he can take that one along. He needs to just dump the MC and pay you off. He has no need for that mountain cat, but what do I know...
If we get enough to do some riding this weekend just give me a call. Sleds sitting in the garage ready to go, just needs a fresh tank of gas. BTW, I'm just gonna give you cash (in full) for the trip in Feb. and will give it to ya if we hook up this weekend if that's cool.

iF I can't get anyone else to commit, I'll room with you.
I' think I'm just going to grab a room, and then cancel later if need be.

phazerhater 12-20-2004, 08:10 PM I'm leaving tomorrow for PR and taking the sled with. Hoping to put some miles on finally! I'll let you know how the trails are when I get back Sun., as long as there is even enough to get out...
atc250rfoxusa 12-22-2004, 07:04 PM Well unfortunetly I cant go because that is the weekend of my son's 1rst birthday so I cant miss out on that.
Hope it goes well for you guys, and hope you get a lil more snow up there, cause there sure isnt much for riding as of now.
Sucks!
phazerhater 12-26-2004, 11:43 PM Yup, just got back from there and there isn't squat. There were people riding, but there wasn't enough IMO. Lots of grass still showing and bare spots.

That sucks! I guess at this point we should cancel...... :bash:
phazerhater 12-28-2004, 01:26 AM What’s the deadline to cancel? I would still hold off if there is time. We're supposed to have snow Thurs-Sun from what I last saw on the weather channel (which I watch religiously now!) I still have faith.
Also, I will be heading back through there this Thurs. while heading to WI on "business" (mixed with pleasure of course) and then back through Sun. I will be able to see what it's like then as well and will post here.
Another weather update...wintery mix Thurs. and snow on and off all the way through Mon. now. Bring it on!
polariskid 12-28-2004, 05:07 PM yes keep the faith IT WILL SNOW
and if it dosent theres snow cross at cantiburry(sp) park that weekend. we could all go there. just a thought
polariskid 12-29-2004, 01:35 PM Just checked the weather forecast through weatherbug>
There in a winter storm watch thursday through fri morning.
Thursday Freezing rain and snow accumulation to 1"
Thursday night Snow Accumulation 3-6"
Friday through sunday Light snow
phazerhater 12-29-2004, 02:40 PM Weather channel has snow listed through Tues. (as far out as there exteded forcast went) I think we should be good to go.

I've got snow, so if anything, I'll stay home and ride!
polariskid 01-02-2005, 02:32 AM well i just got some bad news today, I don't know if ill be able to go now. My friend totaled his blazer, and since i don't have anything to pull my trailer with now its not looking good. i might be able to conn my sisters boyfriend into letting me take his Dodge (its got a HEMI) but i don't know if i can make it.
IM keepin my fingers crossed.
Nick
phazerhater 01-03-2005, 11:06 AM Some pics from MN over the weekend. All in all I would say close to 10" of fresh stuff fell. Extended forcast is calling for more of the white stuff Fri-Sun too. We should be fine for the PR trip now.
BTW The bottom pic of the town is Sabeka, south of Park Rapids. We rode down there and that is when the storm started hitting there pretty good.
zr580cat 01-03-2005, 06:03 PM Even though i'll be riding in Canada that weekend, I'm really bummed that I can't make the SW trip. It would be fun to meet some of you in person. If anyone wants to try to get together another time this winter, even for a day trip, let me know.
I hope you all have a good time, especially now that we have some decent snow in MN!
polariskid 01-05-2005, 10:08 PM i was just wondering how many people are yoing to be there
IM bringing 4 total.
everyone els?
phazerhater 01-05-2005, 11:30 PM I'm going and will most likely be with 2 others. I had next friday off, but unfortunately some stuff came up and I will end up having to work that day. I will be in MN Fri. night though and will hook up with everyone at the motel Sat. morning.
Dave, you goin riding this weekend? Give me a call...

Yeah Saturday! I'll give you a call!
Im bringing six or seven total. Leaving about 2-3 pm on Friday! I have been getting called in to work every weekend and I hope I don't next weekend. I have meetings in Memphis all next week and will be back on Thursday night. Nice break from -30f!
I'll be driving my tan 2001 ford supercrew with a sledbed 4 place trailer.

performancex 01-06-2005, 02:39 PM me, at least.
performancex 01-09-2005, 10:54 AM sO there will be snow there?
Is anyone familiar enough with the area to lead the riding?
performancex 01-09-2005, 12:57 PM I just looked at the forecast, and it looks pretty scary.
19 below for a HIGH on Friday, and 7 below on Saturday.
Sunday is better. HOwever, overnight lows are far worse.
If I leave my sled outside when it is -15 or worse, it will not start.
I've just did that last weekend. Had to wait for it to warm up in the sun for a few hours, after the temps got up to zero.
Keeping my eye on the forecast until the last minute, I guess.

polariskid 01-10-2005, 05:20 PM well since it sounds like every1 is gonna bail out on going is anyone going to go to the snocross at shokopee? if no one is going to park rapids i think i might go there instead.
