Bit of info from DynoTech on a 04 600sdi. Not putting all the info up, you'll have to spend the money for the goodies :)
Flaked rings did little to hurt the power much, just as I have thought for years. Not saying they arn't a problem, but not as big a deal as some make it out to be.

This 2004 600SDI was brought to us by Matt Kelchlin of Ken’s Service and Sales (SkiDoo dealer) in Elma, N.Y. (716-683-1155). We knew ahead of time that though it had only 2600 miles, it had worn rings, which have plagued some SkiDoo twins (leakdown was 50% and 30%). This sled has not had a life of abuse; Matt’s computer read the sled’s ECU—it showed only 71 minutes at full throttle, and max RPM attained was 8300. Big Brother is watching you. Ken and I thought it would be interesting to see what actual power improvement would result from freshening this engine up. So, we connected the sled to our Superflow dyno for baseline numbers. Note that at 70 degrees F the ECU allows us mid .70’s BSFC. Usually, we warm up the engine, engine coolant and pipe(s) and do two or three 10-12 second dyno runs, and expect the engine to repeat within a few tenths of a HP. But even with very constant tuned pipe and coolant temp this engine exhibited an unusually wide nearly one percent HP variation from run to run. One percent variation in HP might not seem like much but it makes looking for minute gains and losses difficult. So, we ran seven dyno runs and used SuperFlow’s averaging program to give us our whipped-ring baseline.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++We were surprised that more was not gained by replacing the rings in this engine. Blowby in a two-cycle should be doubly bad since one would assume that it would contaminate the incoming charge. Bender Racing’s Terry Paine predicted correctly during our predyno coffee hour that little would be gained. They had worked for a week with one of their ProStock engines to improve leakdown from 20% to about 3% (special gapless rings, diamond honing, etc) and gained zero HP on their SuperFlow dyno.

114hp stock, at 7900-----after they got done, with a few simple mods, 124 at 7900

Dave, I used to get their newsletter, but the online version has been a hassle. Maybe I'll sign up again.

When Jim had his own dyno in Batavia I took my '85 MX down to check out. I think it peaked @ 72 HP w/ the Rotax pipe & 67 w/ the PSI single :cussing:

Is my fan gonna have the whole "Big Brother is watching you" ECU thing??? If it is, i'm in trouble :D

I think if the sled has the MPEM module, yes that info is stored for download.

Be hard to tell the dealer you were not hard on a sled, when they can pull that info! :(

I know MY SDI lost gobs of power when the rings went bad, because it couldn't even maintain FULL RPM. I had to turn the clickers to make up for the loss of overall power. It was a slouch, and almost impossible to start and idle.

After my rebuild It was AMAZING the power it had. Sadly though it was rebuilt with DOO'd JUNK rings again. I'll be getting Cudneys this year after she blows again!

If a dealer "reads" the MPEM on my sled after this past season, he would probably recommend a '71 Olympique 335 to me. After 620 miles, I don't think I have 5 minutes of WOT on her!.... This season should be ( WILL BE ) different! :D

Mine is either CLAMPED or the Brake is on.
I should just Zip-Tie the throttle to the bars, and just hit the kill switch when I come into a corner.

A 2 cycle is a 2 cycle. Lots of fuel, lots of power per cc, and lots of wear. It doesn't matter whether you ride it like a grandmother, or really keep it screaming. The compression ratio these machines have, and the design of the pre-mix lubrication, is what allows the engine components to wear, even under slow operation.

The more throttle applied the more oil injected. Sounds safer to me, I 'll have to go by that theory this season :)

It's not the reving up that kills the 2-stroke engine...it's the coming down from high rev's and load with no throttle applied. My mechanice said most engines die on the lake after a hard run because the guy riding it simply lifted his hand off the throttle...the engine is still turning over at high rpm's....but little fuel is going in the cylinders and more importantly, little oil. Always pulse the throttle when coming down off of a speed run....I do this all the time and touch wood.....never had a problem.

Tiggyboot-

Ny dealer said the same thing! besides with the can it sounds nice "burping" it after a hard pull.

Deadman-

You said it "Cudneys" kit rocks over 1,000 hard miles on mine and no problems. compression still 150/148. This season it gets the head/shim kit.

Thats the word from a lot of guys who replaced the rings. They say you will not believe how much power you lost untill you change them. Find it hard to believe that they could find little if any extra power by replacing the worn out rings.
