This is from Mercs. own website, and they are actually gloating about having a 22+% import duty applied to Japanese outboards. Seems that they forgot to mention in this press release that (a) Brunswick moved a major boat factory to Mexico last year (b) Merc. is in the process of opening an O/B engine factory in China © Yamaha is their main 4 stroke engine supplier for all 4 stroke engines except for the new Verado series (225 Hp and higher) and (d) Brunswick had an absolutely stellar year in 2003..... so it is unbelievable that anyone would believe their claims about being hurt by 'dumping' in North America.
Seems to me that Merc. should concentrate on building better engines (ie. "Poptimaxes") rather than getting the government to fill their orderbook.
Don't these guys realize that Honda is just going to start building O/B's in Marysville next to the Goldwing assembly line (remember when Harley did the same thing) and Yamaha will make a deal with Toyota (or just set up their own plant).
